Fort Worth-area softball roundup: Did Mansfield Legacy and Keller advance?
The UIL Texas high school softball playoff area round is wrapping up.
Several Fort Worth-area teams competed for spots in the regional semifinal round on Friday, May 2. Here is a roundup of the results.
Mansfield Legacy completes sweep of Midland
The top five hitters in the Mansfield Legacy lineup collected 14 of the Broncos 17 hits as Legacy downed Midland 9-3 in Game 2 on Friday, May 2, to sweep the Class 6A Division 2 area-round series at Clyde Eula High School. Legacy shut out Midland 10-0 in five innings in Game 1 on Thursday, May 1.
Mansfield Legacy (28-6) moves on to the regional semifinals to face Denton Guyer (28-3) next week. Guyer defeated Richardson Pearce 17-1 in five innings on Thursday in a one-game playoff.
Legacy jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings. Natalie Moreaux (3-for-5, 2 runs), Hope Gaudio (4-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Meredith Davidson (3-for-4, 2 runs, 4 RBI), Ryleigh Stinson (1-for-4) and Katelyn Moreaux (3-for-4, 2 runs, 1 RBI) led the offensive attack for the Broncos.
Davidson homered twice and Katelyn Moreaux also left the yard for Legacy. Midland (29-8) cut the lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the third on a single by Ryleigh Thiebaud that drove home two, but that’s all that the Bulldogs could muster against Stinson (3 innings), who started in the circle for Legacy, and reliever Natalie Moreaux (4 innings)
In Game 1, Natalie Moreaux allowed two hits and struck out nine in the shutout. Seven of the Broncos eight hits in the series opener went for extra bases.
Gaudio, Natalie Moreaux, Katelyn Moreaux and Stinson each had homers with Gaudio, Natalie Moreaux and Davidson delivering doubles.
Keller rallies to oust No. 3 Wolfforth Frenship
Keller got a walk-off, solo home run by Landry Beaman in the bottom of the eighth inning in Game 2 and the Indians defeated Wolfforth Frenship 12-5 in a deciding Game 3 to take the Class 6A Division 2 area-round series on Friday, May 2, at Clyde High School.
Keller (25-7-1), No. 22 in the state in Class 6A according to the Texas Girls Coaches Association rankings, will meet either Flower Mound Marcus (24-9) or Arlington (19-10) in the regional semifinals. Marcus beat Arlington 11-0 in Game 1 on Thursday.
Beaman’s homer was her only hit in Game 2, but it came at a critical time. Shortstop Mackenna Jackson went 2-for-3 for the Indians with a homer and double with three RBI and two runs scored and catcher Kaiya Fabela had three hits in four trips with two RBI for Keller.
Frenship (25-5) had tied the game, 5-5, with a bases clearing triple by Kelvie Roberts in the top of the sixth.
Fabela homered twice in Game 3 going 4-for-4 at the plate as Keller scored four runs in the third and three runs in the fourth to take control. Beaman, Madison Eads and Carley Genzer also hit home runs for the Indians.
Frenship defeated Keller 3-1 on Thursday in Game 1.
Birdville walks off Burleson Centennial in one-game playoff
North Richland Hills Birdville got a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to eliminate Burleson Centennial 8-7 in a one-game Class 5A Division 1 area-round playoff at Justin Northwest High School.
Birdville (27-3), No. 11 in the state in Class 5A according to the TGCA, moves on to the regional semifinals where it will meet Abilene (20-9) next week. Abilene had to rally to defeat El Paso Americas losing Game 1, 5-4, then winning 3-2 (8 innings) and 4-2.
Coryn Burris singled to lead off the bottom of the ninth for the Hawks and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Haley Mennenga. After a walk to Reagan Jordan and a fly out, Avery Rodriguez lined a two-out single to center to score Burris for the game winner.
No. 24 Centennial (25-8) got an RBI double by Cheyenne Bruner in the top of the sixth and run scoring singles by Kendall Cottongame and Lexie Arthur in a three-run top of the seventh to tie the game 7-7.
Evelynn Swartzlander went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Burris was 2-for-3 with a walk, three runs scored and two RBI for Birdville. Jordan went the distance in the circle for the Hawks scattering nine hits, allowing seven runs, four earned, with six strikeouts.
Arthur was 2-for-4 for Centennial with a run scored and four RBI.
Godley sweeps Lake Dallas to advance
Godley erased a one-run deficit with a five-run fifth and a four-run seventh to down Lake Dallas 14-11 to sweep their Class 4A Division 1 area-round series on Friday, May 2, at Kennedale High School.
Godley (28-6), No. 10 in the state in Class 4A according to the TGCA, will face No. 22 Sulphur Springs (26-7) in the regional semifinals. Sulphur Springs swept Gilmer 1-0 and 2-1 (10 innings).
The Wildcats, who pounded out 17 hits, trailed 6-5 in the top of the fifth when Dakota Watson knocked in two with a double and Sierra Beratto followed with a double of her own to make it 10-6. Karlee Clark had a two-run single in the seventh and Halle Gross knocked in two more with a triple to make it 14-7.
Lake Dallas (16-11) scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh highlighted with a bases clearing triple by Parker Prewitt, but the Falcons couldn’t complete the comeback to force a Game 3. Alisha Christensen went 3-for-3 for Lake Dallas, including a home run, with two runs scored and four RBI.
Bree Hubbard and Alyssa Castillo both went 4-for-5 for Godley with Hubbard scoring once and driving in three and Castillo picking up two runs and two RBI.
Clark pitched a two-hit shut out in Game 1 on Thursday, May 1. Alissa Sullivan drove in the only run of the game with a solo home run in the second inning.
