Fort Worth-area softball: Lake Ridge rallies to defeat Timber Creek, more
The UIL Texas high school softball playoff bi-district round is wrapping up.
Several Fort Worth-area teams competed for spots in the area round on Saturday, April 26. Here is a roundup of the results.
Mansfield Lake Ridge rallies for series win over Timber Creek
Mansfield Lake Ridge broke open a close game with a five-run third inning as the Eagles took Games 3, 7-2, and oust Keller Timber Creek in a Class 6A Division 1 bi-district series on Saturday, April 26, at the Coppell Softball Complex.
Lake Ridge (17-11), which won Game 2 on Friday 5-2, moves on to the area round and will face Odessa Permian (19-13-2) next week. Permian swept El Paso Montwood 6-2 and 13-11.
“We’re young, but they’re hard workers and great kids,” said Lake Ridge coach Bobbi Cruff. “They’re learning the process, but have supported each other all year and just pull together and get the job done.”
The Eagles led Timber Creek 2-1 heading into the bottom of the third and the Falcons got the first two batters out to start the inning. But Lake Ridge sent 11 hitters to the plate in the inning including doubles from Abigail Milligan and Sydney Charles along with a pair of costly errors on Timber Creek (19-13) to push the lead to 7-1.
Lake Ridge pitcher Scarlett Poore, who was also the winning pitcher in Game 2, scattered seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. Poore took a lined shot off the bat of Cameron Stuhr that hit her in the pitching hand, leaving seam marks, and the mid section, before tossing Stuhr out at first for the second out.
Poore left the game, but was seen flexing her hand in the dugout and appeared to dodge a serious injury.
“The second she lifted her hand up I was like, that’s not good, but she’s a tough kid,” said Cruff.
No. 1 Brock defeats No. 5 Levelland in extra innings thriller
With the UIL’s new split-division format, powerhouses can meet in the opening bi-district round of the playoffs.
That’s exactly what happened when No. 1 Brock and No. 5 Levelland were matched up in the Class 4A Division II bracket. After the Eagles secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory to gain an edge on Friday, Levelland (28-6-1) faced elimination in game two and didn’t go down without a fight.
Brock and Levelland went back and forth in an extra-innings thriller that went 13 frames. In the top of the 13th, Brock’s Carlie Berry delivered the go-ahead hit that put the Eagles on top.
Berry finished with three hits and so did Kayden Blue. M Cedillo powered the offense with a team-high six hits. Brock’s Ali Coleman was effective in relief, giving up two earned runs and striking out 14 batters in 11 innings of work. She slammed the door shut in the 13th with a strikeout, punching Brock’s ticket to the area round.
Brock (27-0-2) is in its first year in Class 4A, and they have yet to lose a game.
Mansfield Legacy walks off Southlake Carroll, advances to area round
After an 11-2 loss to Mansfield Legacy in game one of their bi-district round series on Friday, Southlake Carroll responded with a vengeance in game two, securing an 11-4 victory to force game three on Saturday, April 26, at Chisholm Trail High School.
But the Mansfield Legacy Broncos (25-6) capitalized in the series’ final moments to take a 5-4 victory to advance to the area round. Senior Ryleigh Stinson hit a sacrifice fly to walk it off.
The Broncos were led by Katelyn Moreaux, who tallied a team-high three hits. She also pitched, giving up seven hits and three earned runs through seven innings.
In game one, Southlake Carroll (20-13) left fielder Cate Stoklas powered through illness and posted three hits and three RBIs. Scarlett Kuhn was another key performer with three hits and four RBIs. Kuhn also had three hits in game two.
The contest was tied at 1-1 until the fifth inning when the Dragons broke open the game with a six-run frame. Junior Sinclaire Robinson pitched a complete game to help extend the Dragons’ season, giving up four runs.
In 2024, Mansfield Legacy reached the regional quarterfinals, where the Broncos lost to Waco Midway. Southlake Carroll reached the regional semifinals, where it was eliminated by Denton Guyer, an eventual state runner-up.
