Fort Worth Boswell girls’ basketball head coach John Reese is retiring from coaching after a 33-year career, Reese told the Star-Telegram.

Reese, the 2024-25 Star-Telegram Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year, led Boswell to a Class 6A Division II State Championship and a 39-2 record. The Pioneers won an undefeated district title and beat three ranked teams en route to the program’s first title, which was Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD’s first and Fort Worth’s first girls basketball title in 18 years.

Reese finished his career with 528 wins. The Pioneers earned a Max Preps No. 16 national ranking in his final season at the helm.

After starting his career in 1996, Reese spent 19 years at Bryan Independent School District. He spent a decade as the head coach of Bryan High School’s boys’ basketball program, winning seven district titles and making the playoffs nine times. He then spent three years on staff at Texas A&M’s men’s basketball.

Before joining EMS ISD in 2015, he spent one year as an assistant at Plano East High School. With the Pioneers, he won five district championships — four of them came with undefeated district records. Reese’s Boswell teams made the playoffs every year during his tenure.

In 2024, Reese was named the Star-Telegram Coach of the Year after leading the Pioneers to the regional finals. Reese played collegiate basketball at Angelo State University.
