Coppell defeats Keller in 6A D1 regional semifinal clash
After a double overtime victory against Lake Highlands in the area round, Coppell (19-2-3) looked to continue its season in a Class 6A Division 1 regional semifinal against Keller (14-2-6).
After a slow start, Coppell took control, moving on to capture a strong 4-1 victory and advance to the regional finals on Friday, March 28 at Dragon Stadium. The Cowgirls will face Flower Mound (15-4-1) in the next round.
“We’re really proud of the girls,” Coppell coach Craig Able said. “We knew we had the potential to have a special season, and I’m proud of them for having it.”
Keller freshman Billie Davis put the Indians ahead in the 14th minute. At that point, Coppell found itself in a hole but responded accordingly with four unanswered goals.
“You never want to go down in a game, but I’m proud of them,” Able said. “They stayed true to who they are. They didn’t panic. They didn’t play out of system. We’ve got a pretty tight system that we run. We know what makes us good. The girls did a great job of remaining calm.”
Coppell is looking for its first state tournament appearance since the 2015 season, when the Cowgirls won a 6A state title. Moving forward, Able wants to see the team put together a complete game and avoid having to erase an early deficit, which has been the case the last two games.
Colleyville Heritage defeats Tascosa, advances to regional final
For the second consecutive season, Colleyville Heritage girls (15-2-1) soccer is advancing to the regional finals.
The Panthers defeated Amarillo Tascosa 4-2 in a Class 5A Division 1 regional semifinal on Friday, March 28 at Abilene Wylie High School. Sophomore forward Ashlyn Bringedahl led the way with two goals, while junior Camille Seeley and sophomore Brielle McDaniel also scored.
Sophomore Addison Shimmick did an excellent job facilitating, finishing with a team-high two assists. It was a fantastic performance from Colleyville Heritage, a team fresh off a thrilling area round victory that went 12 penalty kick rounds.
The Panthers made it all the way to the state final in 2024 and, with two more wins, will make it back to the UIL state championships in Georgetown, Texas.
Grapevine defeats Lubbock Monterey, advances to regional final
Grapevine (10-10-4) finished fourth in the regular season, earning the last playoff spot out of District 6-5A.
All that matters in the playoffs, however, is surviving and advancing. And that’s just what Grapevine did with a 1-0 victory over Lubbock Monterey on Friday, March 28 at Abilene’s Shotwell Stadium.
At the start of the second half, Grapevine sophomore Tatum Harig scored from about 35 yards out on an assist from junior Chloe O’Steen. The Mustang defense held the lead the rest of the way, shutting out Monterey.
Grapevine advances to face Argyle, a District 6-5A rival that won the district title. Argyle (18-2-1) secured two wins over Grapevine in district play; the first was a 2-0 win, and the second was a narrow 2-1 victory.
Grapevine last made the regional finals in the 2023 season, when the Mustangs won a Class 5A state championship.
