Fort Worth-area girls basketball awards: Boswell earns several top honors, more from area
It’s basketball awards week at the Star-Telegram, and we’re releasing individual awards before the reveal of the Fort Worth All-Area Super Team on Wednesday, March 26.
The boys basketball individual awards were released on Monday, March 24.
Here are the individual award winners for the 2024-25 girls’ basketball season.
Player of the Year: Camille Williams, Fort Worth Boswell
Boswell senior Camille Williams entered her senior season with sky-high championship expectations.
In a tough Class 6A Division 2 bracket, Williams and the Pioneers delivered with Boswell’s first state championship. She averaged 16.2 points, 8 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3 steals en route to district MVP honors.
Williams, a Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-Region and All-State selection, is the No. 36 ranked senior in the ESPN 100 senior rankings and a Miami commit. In the state title game, she had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
She led a talented, youthful and well-rounded Pioneer squad. Although her averages were still high, Williams sacrificed individual statistics for Boswell’s championship success.
Boswell, ranked No. 2 in the TABC’s 6A rankings, defeated No. 9 Fort Bend Hightower, No. 4 Lancaster, No. 13 Frenship, No. 6 Braswell and more on the way to its state title. Williams and the Pioneers finished the season on a 15-game win streak.
Williams has earned consecutive Star-Telegram Player of the Year awards.
Defensive Player of the Year: Haleigh Jackson, Fort Worth Boswell
Haleigh Jackson, the District 3-6A Defensive Player of the Year, was an absolute force for Boswell as a senior. She averaged 13 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals to help lead the Pioneers to a state title.
She earned TABC All-Region and All-State honors and was a driving force in a stellar team defense that allowed 39.17 points per game. Against ranked playoff opponents, the Pioneers allowed 37 points per game.
Jackson is committed to playing collegiate basketball at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith.
Offensive Player of the Year: Bralyn Peck, Decatur
Bralyn Peck, a junior, was a leading force in Decatur’s Class 4A Division 1 state championship victory. She averaged 16.8 points, 8.1 Rebounds, 1.5 Assists, 1.8 Blocks, and 2.6 Steals per game en route to District 7-4A MVP honors.
Peck made the TABC All-State and All-Region teams. After securing the Eagles’ first state title, she was named the Class 4A Division 1 state tournament MVP. Peck is a three-star 247Sports’ prospect with an offer from Oklahoma State.
Co-Newcomer of the Year: Laney Hudson, Brock
Laney Hudson, a freshman contributing to a talented Brock girls’ basketball squad, had an eventful debut season. She earned District Newcomer of the Year honors, averaging 13.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists.
Hudson earned TABC All-Region and Texas Girls Coaches Association All-State honors, helping lead the Eagles to a 25-10 record and a regional final appearance. It was Brock’s first year in Class 4A, and Hudson’s stellar freshman campaign suggests the Eagles can stay competitive for years to come.
Co-Newcomer of the Year: Style Brazile, Decatur
Brazile, a freshman, played a pivotal role in Decatur’s first-ever state champion run. She averaged 14.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 2.8 steals per game to help power the Eagles to newfound success.
Brazile earned TABC All-State and All-Region honors. She helped lead Decatur, ranked No. 4 in Class 4A by the TABC, to 36 wins and an undefeated district championship run.
Coach of the Year: John Reese, Fort Worth Boswell
Under John Reese’s leadership, Boswell reached the top of the Texas high school basketball mountain.
He coached the Pioneers, a well-rounded team that thrived on unity, selflessness and a dominating team defense, to the Class 6A Division 2 state championship. It was Eagle Mountain-Saginaw’s first girls’ basketball state title and also the city of Fort Worth’s first in 18 years.
Four starters averaged 12 or more points per game, which showcases Boswell’s depth and Reese’s ability to coach a team-oriented, fast-paced and ultra-effective offense.
Reese has now won consecutive Star-Telegram Coach of the Year Awards.
Honorable Mention: Drew Coffman, Decatur
