Burleson ISD promotes Centennial defensive coordinator Blake Meyer to head coach
Burleson Centenial High School has found its next head football coach and athletic coordinator: Blake Meyer.
Burleson ISD promoted Meyer, who has served as the Spartans’ defensive coordinator for 15 seasons. Meyer was hired by Kyle Geller, Centennial’s only coach in program history, and helped start and build the program; Geller will move into an administration role.
Centennial, with Meyer orchestrating the defense, has made the playoffs in 11 consecutive seasons. Meyer has 25 years of coaching experience. With Centennial, he has been part of six bi-district championships, three area titles, and a state quarterfinals appearance.
In the 2024 high school football season, Centennial finished with a 5-6 record and made a playoff appearance. Georgetown, in the bi-district round, secured a 48-42 overtime victory.
Meyer’s football track record is proven, and his athletic leadership has extended beyond the field. He established BISD’s first wrestling program and has coached five state champions. He also has experience as a powerlifting coach.
“We are thrilled to have Coach Meyer assume the role of CHS Head Football Coach,” said BISD Superintendent Dr. Bret Jimerson in a press release. “I have known him for many years and have seen firsthand his dedication to the school, the program, and our student-athletes.
“This commitment will allow him to continue the winning tradition at CHS, and I look forward to seeing the program thrive under his leadership.”
BISD Athletic Director Kevin Ozee said he is “thrilled” to welcome Meyer into his new role.
“Coach Meyer has been an integral part of our athletic program for over a decade, demonstrating exceptional leadership, dedication, and a deep commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the field,” Ozee said via press release. “Blake is deeply respected by his players and the community. He has been Coach Geller’s right-hand man and will continue to build on CHS’s success.
“His vision for our program aligns perfectly with our core values, and we are confident that, under his leadership, Centennial athletics will continue to succeed.”s
Meyer said it’s a “dream come true” to be the Spartans’ head coach.
“I would like to thank the hiring committee and Coach Ozee for putting their trust in me,” Meyer wrote in a press release. “Thank you Dr. Jimerson and the Board of Trustee, not only for this opportunity, but for all that they do to make Burleson ISD a special place. I would also like to thank Coach Geller for his leadership, which has helped guide and prepare me for this next chapter.
“I am excited to add to the great legacy that we have built here at Centennial. Most of all I am excited to lead such a great group of young men. I couldn’t ask for a better team to coach. They are what makes Centennial special, and I am proud to be their coach.”
Meyer, who holds a bachelors degree from Oklahoma State, will begin his new role on March 11. Centennial High School will host a reception for staff, players, and parents from 6-7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11 in its indoor facility.
