Waco Meyer survives Hearne to claim state title

Waco Meyer survived a late comeback attempt by Hearne to secure a 53-49 victory in the Class 2A Division I state championship.

Meyer didn’t score a field goal in the final 3:19 of gameplay, but two free throws by senior Jordan Sewell in the final seconds helped seal the deal. Junior Jordan Bradely earned MVP honors, finishing with a team-high 17 points and six rebounds.

Sophomore Ve’Shawn Long also had a strong showing with 13 points on 5 of 8 shooting. He also had four assists and made 2 of 3 three-pointers.

Meyer was making its first state championship game appearance, and delivered a win in the biggest game in program history. Hearne, a four-time state tournament member, was also looking for its first state title.

The difference in the game was arguably Hearne’s three-point shooting efficiency. The Ravens shot 6 of 14 from distance, which made up for Hearne outrebounding them by 17.

Martin’s Mill defeats Lipan to win first title since 1949

In the Class 2A division II state championship, Martin’s Mill defeated Lipan 55-43 to win its first state title since the 1949 season. The Mustangs have seven state appearances and six since the 2006 season.

Martin’s Mill (36-1) Senior guard Jak Kinder led the way with 19 points, while junior guard Archer Schneider also was a key contributor with 18 points and seven rebounds. Lipan (34-5) sophomore Even Lott led his team with 10 points on 3 of 5 shooting, three rebounds and three assists.

Lipan, a program with six state titles, was searching for a championship three-peat. With the victory, Martin’s Mill claimed the 2024-25 Class 2A Division II state championships in both boys and girls basketball.

Perrin-Whitt defeats Turkey Valley to claim 1A D1 state title

Perrin-Whitt, in its first state appearance since the 1946 season, was looking to win its first state title.

The Pirates (34-6) delivered their greatest victory in program history, defeating Turkey Valley 65-46 to claim the Class 1A Division I state championship. To earn MVP honors, senior guard Jack Mccormick scored a team high 22 points on 7 of 22 shots.

Junior forward Case Lambert and junior forward Cole Keeney were also key contributors with 17 and 16 points, respectively.

Defensively, the Pirates held Turkey Valley to 11.5 points per quarter. The highlight of the defensive performance came in the third quarter, when the Patriots were held to five points.

Offensively, Perrin-Whitt was powered by efficient three-point shooting. As a team, the Pirates shot 11 of 23 (48%) from behind the three-point line.

They also took care of the basketball, turning it over just four times. On the other hand, Turkey Valley turned it over 15 times, and the Pirates capitalized with 20 points off turnovers.

Jayton holds Bryson to zero first-half field goals, wins state title

The first game of the UIL boys’ basketball state championships was a lopsided affair.

Bryson was outmatched from the start and trailed the entirety of the game. Jayton held Bryson to zero first-half field goals and three first-half points en route to a dominant 70-36 victory in the Class 1A Division II state championship.

Bryson’s three points in the first half came from the free-throw line. With the result of the game being a foregone conclusion in the second half, Bryson (29-5) was able to score more consistently.

Jayton (28-2), in its third consecutive state tournament appearance, has won back-to-back state titles. Junior guard Colt Gentry led the way with 24 points on 7 of 9 shooting, earning a championship MVP honor for the second straight year.

Sophomore Lorenzo Robles Vargas and junior Bode Ham were also key contributors with 12 points each.
