Summit rolls past Colleyville Heritage for state semifinal berth

The Mansfield Summit boys basketball team dominated from the start as the Jaguars rolled past Colleyville Heritage 59-43 in the Class 5A Division 2 Region I final on Friday, Feb. 28, at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center.

Summit (31-7), No. 6 in the state in Class 5A according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, will be making its second trip to the state semifinals when the Jags face No. 3 Killeen Ellison (30-5) next week. Ellison defeated Waco University 56-53 in triple overtime to advance.

Summit lost in the state semis in 2022-23.

Summit took advantage of ice-cold shooting by Colleyville Heritage to start as the Jaguars jumped out to an 8-0 lead behind junior guards Theo Brannan and Caleb Richard.

The Panthers only had one second chance try in the first half as Summit ruled the boards while building a 27-7 lead at the break. Colleyville Heritage went 2 of 18 shooting from the field in the first half including 0 of 12 from three-point range where the Panthers usually thrive.

“We work on defense every day in practice and coach (Emund Prichett) is really big on defense,” said Richard, who finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds. “We play so hard in practice. It’s my first year with the team and I really love my brothers right here. This is a big win for us and I just can’t wait to go to state.”

Brannan, who was a freshman the last time Summit reached the state semifinals, had 14 points as well to go along with seven assists, mainly feeding Richard and Ian Sedah (14 points) down low.

“That’s always the game plan,” said Brannan of getting the ball in to the post. “I know that if I get it to number 15 (Ian Sedah) that it’s a bucket every time. Me and Ian (Sedah) have been waiting two years for this chance to get back to state. It’s all we’ve been talking about.”

Colleyville Heritage didn’t make its first field goal until the 6:59 mark of the second quarter. Shots did start to fall for the Panthers in the second half, but it was too little too late.

“Defense travels,” said Summit coach Emund Prichett. “We don’t know if we’re gonna make shots every night, but we can get out and guard and the effort level can be there. We played the boards really, really well and I thought that was the difference in the game.”

Cash Gardner hit six three pointers, all in the second half, for the Panthers to finish with a game-high 19 points. Camden Coburn pitched in 10 points for CH.

Summit, the District 8-5A champions, ended a Cinderella season by Colleyville Heritage (19-16) as the Panthers reached the regional finals after finishing fourth in District 6-5A.

“I’m so stinking proud of my guys, they’re so tough,” said Colleyville Heritage coach Stephen Hamrick. “If we could have had a better start that would have been huge for us.

“Hats off to Summit. They’re a great basketball team and are well coached. We have a ton of respect for them.”
