Colleyville Heritage moves on after close win over Arlington Seguin
The Colleyville Heritage and Arlington Seguin boys basketball teams couldn’t have been more evenly matched despite playing different styles of basketball.
The Panthers like to work the ball inside and out for a three pointer. Seguin liked to work the ball inside, preferably, but looking for the best shot.
The game was back and forth for much of the contest, but a strange set of circumstances late in the third quarter gave Colleyville Heritage the room it needed to hold off Seguin for a 58-49 win in a Class 5A Division 2 area-round game on Friday, Feb. 21, at the Arlington ISD Athletics Center.
Colleyville Heritage (18-15), the fourth-place team out of District 6-5A, advances to the regional semifinal where the Panthers will face Amarillo Palo Duro (29-5) next week.
“We’ve been preparing for this all year,” said D’Mauri Evans, a junior guard who finished with 11 points. “It’s a battle every practice, every game, but every time we stick together. We have our downs and we have our ups, but all in all, we stick together and that’s why we win.”
Colleyville Heritage doesn’t have a lot of height, speed, or super athletic players, but head coach Stephen Hamrick says his kids make up for it in other ways.
“We definitely do not pass the eye test, but we are unbelievably tough, mentally and physically,” said Hamrick of his squad. “We want our identity to be defensively...defense, defense, defense and toughness. We feel with our skill level and our decision making and the way we can shoot the basketball, we feel we’re going to be in games if we can just get stops and rebounds.
“That was a big emphasis tonight for us, because those Seguin guys are such a really good rebounding team, especially from the offensive end. I’m just super proud of our guys.”
The Panthers had four players in double figures scoring, led by Bodey Weaver with 15. Cash Gardner finished with 12, Evans with 11 and Grayson Eichinger had 10.
Zodrick Green did everything he could to keep the Cougars in the game scoring 15 of his game-high 18 points in the second half for Seguin.
“We played 15 playoff teams on the year so our record isn’t beautiful,” said Hamrick. “But we put them in moments prior our district play, which has unbelievable teams that all went to the next round, and it prepared us for February.
“They’ve handled it well and were maturing up. They’re just connected and I’m just so proud of them.”
No. 25 Birdville upsets No. 10 Mansfield Timberview in thriller
No. 25 Birdville (33-3), the District 6-5A champion, has had a phenomenal season.
The Hawks soared to even higher heights on Friday, Feb. 21, at Coppell High School. Birdville narrowly upset No. 10 Mansfield Timberview (28-8) 50-48 in a Class 5A Division I area round playoff game.
Sawyer Dotson, a 6-foot-7 wing, hit a midrange game-winner to power the Hawks to victory.
Birdville will face Wichita Falls Legacy in the regional semifinals at a time and place to be determined.
No. 7 Mansfield Summit rolls past No. 8 Argyle
The No. 7 Mansfield Summit Jaguars entered the area round with the No. 8 ranked Argyle Eagles (18-17) in their way.
Summit (29-7) paid no attention to Argyle’s ranking, trouncing the Eagles to secure a dominant 37-18 victory. For the fourth consecutive year, Summit has advanced past the area round.
Summit’s Ian Sedah had a game-high 12 points, which included a “monstrous dunk.” The focal point of Summit’s performance was the team defense; the Jags held Argyle to just 4.5 points per quarter.
Mansfield Summit will face Canutillo (24-9) in the regional semifinals at a time and a place that is to be determined.
