Boys basketball area round: Brock storms past Eagle Mountain, Krum takes down Glen Rose
The Brock boys basketball team got a test from Fort Worth Eagle Mountain, but the Eagles pulled away at the end for a 57-42 win in a Class 4A Division 2 area-round playoff game on Thursday, Feb. 20, at Aledo High School.
Brock (28-8), No. 20 in the state in Class 4A according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, will likely have its hands full in the regional semifinal next week. The Eagle will have to face the winner of No. 2 Amarillo Randall (29-5) and El Paso Riverside (13-10).
The teams were almost mirror images of each other with a clear top player, Avery Moses for Eagle Mountain and Jacoby Boxell for Brock, but each had a handful of key support players around them.
It was back and forth early, but Brock went on a 9-0 run to start the second quarter led by Jacoby Boxell who had a three during the spree. But Eagle Mountain countered with three threes of its own with two coming by A.J. Brothers and another by Moses to tie the game at 21 with 2:33 left in the first half.
Brock led 25-21 at the intermission.
The Eagles got a pair of baskets by Eli Paez, who led Brock with 20 points, to help pull out to a 29-21 lead to start the second half. But Moses, who led all scorers wth 26 points, answered for Eagle Mountain with a three-point play, a pair of free throws and a thunderous dunk to cut the lead to 31-30 at the 5:10 mark of the third quarter.
“They play hard and number 23 (Avery Moses) is so hard to stop,” said Brock head coach Zach Boxell, father of Jacoby Boxell. “ No matter what you do he finds a way to score. They also have a couple of kids that can hit the three so you can’t worry about him too much or he’ll kick it out and if they’re hitting then you’re in trouble.”
Eagle Mountain (18-15) seemed to have stolen the momentum, but a clutch three by Paez and a steal and lay in by Colt Matlock gave it right back to Brock.
Eagle Mountain did cut the lead to 39-36 on a pair of Moses free throws with 52 seconds left in the third quarter, but Brock went on a 14-2 run from that point to put the game out of reach.
“We had to double team him (Avery Moses) late to try to keep the ball out of his hands,” said Zach Boxell of shutting down the Knights late. “We have a pretty balanced team as far as guys that can score and play defense, so if one guy’s not scoring, then someone else can step up.”
Jacoby Boxell and Colt Matlock added 10 points each for Brock. Klain Ogamba and A.J. Brothers chipped in six each for Eagle Mountain.
“We had a lot of young guys on the floor doing some big guy things in some big guy moments,” said Eagle Mountain coach Scott Richardson whose program is in its first year of existence. “I’m really proud of how they just battled in this situation against something they’ve never seen and have never seen anything like this. So to come like they did and play hard, play together and fight like they did. I’m really proud of this group, man, what a what a year.”
Glen Rose can’t keep pace with No. 15 Krum
The Krum boys basketball team used a swarming full-court press and pressure on the ball that created numerous scoring chances as the Bobcats jumped on Glen Rose from the start to earn a 72-41 win over the Tigers in a Class 4A Division 2 area-round game on Thursday, Feb. 20, at Aledo High School.
Krum (24-9), No. 15 in Class 4A by the TABC, moves on the regional semifinals and will play the winner of Friday’s El Paso Mountain View (14-18)-Pampa (20-14) contest.
Krum’s pressure was constant and the game went from a 2-2 tie to 10-2 in the blink of an eye. The Bobcats led 14-5 after one quarter and held a 22-8 lead when Cash Andrus laid it in with 3:14 left before halftime.
Krum only hit one three-pointer in the first half with 2 seconds remaining before the intermission, but added seven more threes in the second half as the Bobcats steadily increased their lead.
Asher Owens led all scorers with 19 points, with five three-pointers, for Krum. Andyn Garza chipped in 18 points and Brian Dorgbeter had 12 for the Bobcats.
Zeke Niedziela led Glen Rose (26-9) with 11 points and Dawson Miller added 10 more for the Tigers.
