Boys basketball bi-district roundup: Timberview races past Fort Worth Paschal, more from area
The Texas high school boys basketball playoffs are here, and Fort Worth-area teams are beginning their playoff runs.
No. 11 Mansfield Timberview races past Fort Worth Paschal
The Fort Worth Paschal boys basketball team hung with Mansfield Timberview early, but the Wolves pulled away in workmanlike fashion to post a 62-39 win over the Panthers in a Class 5A Division 1 bi-district game on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at the Arlington ISD Athletics Center.
Timberview (28-7), ranked No. 11 in the state in Class 5A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, will advance to the area round and face No. 25 North Richland Hills Birdville (32-3) later this week. Birdville defeated Keller Fossil Ridge 59-39.
Paschal trailed 14-10 after a three pointer by Colton Patterson with 1:12 left in the first quarter. But the Wolves answered with a basket by Jonathan Williams and threes by Jaiceon Irvin and Jaden Marshall to take a 22-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
A lay in by Paschal’s Kris Freeman cut Timberview’s lead to 27-21 with 3:06 left in the second quarter, but the Wolves countered with a 14-4 run capped with another three by Irvin to take a 41-27 lead with 5:57 left in the third quarter.
Timberview coasted from that point, leading by 26 at the end of the third quarter, 56-30.
Irvin led Timberview with 16 points, including four three pointers, with Damien Jackson chipping in 11 for the Wolves. Patterson led Paschal with a game-high 17 points.
No. 6 Mansfield Summit smothers Fort Worth Polytechnic
The Fort Worth Polytechnic boys basketball team was on fire early, but Mansfield Summit turned up the defensive pressure and ran away with a 65-31 win over the Parrots in a Class 5A Division 2 bi-district game on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at the Arlington ISD Athletics Center.
Summit (28-7), No. 6 in the state in Class 5A according to the TABC, will advance to face Argyle (21-13) in the area round. Argyle defeated Fort Worth Chisholm Trail 46-37.
Polytechnic (11-18) was making its first playoff appearance since the 2015-16 season and couldn’t miss early. The Parrots hit their first five shots from the field and jumped out to an early 5-2 lead.
Summit rallied, but the Parrots pulled to within 16-13 on a three by Nevanly Cisse, Jr. with 1:56 left in the first quarter. But the Jaguars turned up the defensive pressure after that which made it difficult for Poly to even find a shot much less make one.
The Parrots didn’t make a field goal from the 1:56 mark of the first quarter until there was 3:17 left in the third quarter. A basket by Poly’s Nevanly Cisse, Jr. ended a drought of 10 missed chances from the floor as Summit’s lead ballooned to 50-18, a 34-5 run.
Summit was leading 31-15 late in the second quarter when a thunderous dunk by Isaiah Walker brought the crowd to its feet in a frenzy. The Jaguars rolled after that getting easy offensive chances off of defensive pressure.
Summit had 11 players that scored in the game led by Theo Brannan who finished with 12 points. Caleb Richard had 11 points for the Jaguars and Jacques Alphonce led all scorers with 13 points for Polytechnic.
Fort Worth Southwest can’t complete comeback, falls to Burkburnett
The Fort Worth Southwest boys basketball team had a tough first-round draw having to face No. 17 Burkburnett.
The Raiders got down by as many as 16 points in the second half, but a furious rally fell just short as Burkburnett escaped with a 69-66 win in a Class 4A Division 1 bi-district game on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at Denton Ryan High School.
Burkburnett (27-6) moves on to face No. 5 Lubbock Estacado (28-6) in the area round later this week. Estacado trounced Graham 75-38 in Abilene on Tuesday.
Southwest (25-11) shut down Burkburnett’s Ozavian Buford in the second half, but Buford scored 18 of his game-high 22 points in the first half, including 12 in the second quarter.
B.J. Baker led the Raiders with 21 points and was on fire in the fourth quarter scoring nine points in the period. Baker had four three pointers on the night.
Ayden White kept Burkburnett from falling behind in the fourth quarter. White scored 10 points in the period and finished with 20 points on four three pointers and going eight of eight from the free throw line.
King Taylor had 10 of his 15 points in the second half to help the Southwest rally. Sage Gonzalez (three 3s) and Chandin Davis had nine points each for the Raiders.
Kingston Gould added 12 points for the Bulldogs.

The Mansfield Lake Ridge boys basketball team controlled the game from the start en route to a 65-48 win over Hurst L.D. Bell in a Class 6A Division 1 bi-district game on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at Grand Prairie High School.
Lake Ridge (33-2), No. 3 in the state in Class 6A according to the TABC, moves on and will face El Paso Eastlake (23-9) in the area round later this week. Eastlake defeated Odessa 62-56 on Tuesday afternoon.
