The Texas high school girls basketball regional semifinals continued on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Here are the top stories from Fort Worth-area basketball teams.

Battle of Texas powerhouses: No. 2 Boswell defeats No. 6 Braswell

The Class 6A Division II girls’ basketball bracket is loaded with talent, and two of the best teams in Texas clashed at Ponder High School: No. 2 Boswell and No. 6 Braswell. In a back and forth game, the Pioneers got an upper hand and secured an 52-44 victory.

“First of all, let me say, to God be the glory,” Boswell coach John Reese said. “I’m so proud of these young ladies and the effort and all that they put in. I’ve just talked to these young ladies all year long about the schedule that we played and how that schedule will prepare us for moments like this.”

Boswell (36-2) will face Wolfforth Frenship or No. 11 Denton Guyer in the Region One final at a place and a time that is to be determined. The Guyer Wildcats defeated Boswell 54-51 in a non-district game this season.

“We have to enjoy the moment tonight, then turn around and get ready for another tough opponent,” Reese said. “Once the playoffs start, there are no bad teams left.”

With an emphasis on strong interior defense on Braswell star Amaya McDonald, the Pioneers took a solid 33-17 lead into the half. Boswell doesn’t have excessive size but makes up for it with aggressive, physical defense.

In the third quarter, Braswell (34-3) seized the momentum, found a way to slow Boswell’s transition offense and chipped away at the Pioneer lead. Boswell sophomore Sydney Durrah was able to play damage control, giving her team a 42-32 lead heading into the final frame with a buzzer-beating three-pointer; senior Camille Williams, the No. 36 ranked senior in the nation by ESPN, made the assist.

“It was huge,” Resse said of the shot. “(Durrah) hits big threes. Salena (Carrasco) hit big threes. And those free throws down the stretch were great. We just had big moments and big plays, and that is what they’ve done throughout the season.”

In the fourth quarter, Braswell’s defense relentlessly pressured Boswell’s ballhandlers, but the Pioneers played with and composure to stay ahead, control the ball and drain the clock.

“They found a way,” Reese said. “They talked. They fought through it. They found a way in the fourth quarter to get buckets and stops when we needed stops. I’m just so proud of them right now.”

Durrah finished with a team-high 19 points. Salena Carrasco contributed 14 points, and Williams notched 8 points and a team high 10 rebounds.

No. 1 recruit leads Monterey past Brewer to set up clash vs. Argyle

Aaliyah Chavez is the nation’s No. 1 recruit nationwide for a reason.

Chavez scored 50 points to power No. 6 Monterey to a 76-40 win over Brewer in a Class 5A Divison II regional semifinal to set up a regional final vs. No. 8 Argyle. The Eagles defeated Plainview 50-34 on Monday to advance on Monday.

Argyle and Monterey will face off at Abilene Christian University on Friday, Feb. 21. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Chavez, who has offers from South Carolina, Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, LSU and more, scored 45 points in the area round. She will be an incredibly tough task for the Eagles, a team that takes pride in physical defense.

In three games, Argyle has averaged 46.3 points. The Eagles will enter the game as an underdog, but don’t count them out; Argyle upset No. 7 Mansfield Summit in the area round.
