Girls basketball area round: Aledo defeats 2024 state finalist Mansfield Timberview, more
The Texas high school girls basketball area round started on Thursday.
Here are the things to know, results and more from Fort Worth-area playoff games.
Aledo knocks off 2024 state finalist Mansfield Timberview
In the 2024 playoffs, Mansfield Timberview eliminated Aledo 70-32 in the area round and continued to make a state championship appearance.
In a playoff rematch, the Bearcats turned the tables. Aledo (23-11, 10-2) started the game on a 10-0 run and held a solid lead the rest of the way en route to a statement 46-24 victory on Thursday, Feb. 13 at North Crowley High School.
“We talked about in the locker room to not have fear the mental block of last year them destroying us in this round,” Aledo head coach Donny Ott said. “So, we just wanted to try to come out and prove to ourselves that we’re ready for this game and this moment, and we really wanted that fast start. … And I’m real proud of their focus coming into the game.”
Aledo’s team defense stole the show, hounding ball handlers, fighting for loose balls and protecting the paint. In the third quarter, Aledo held Timberview (20-16, 9-5) to just one point.
Offensively, junior guard Elizabeth Griffin and junior forward Tiara Butler led the way with 13 and 14 points, respectively.
The Bearcats had a great game but also have room for improvement. To coach Ott, the potential is “endless.”
“I feel like we just keep getting better every game,” Ott said. “I’m just really excited about their growth. From where we were to start the year off to where we are now — It’s just been incredible.”
In the regional semifinals, the Bearcats will face Tascosa or Chapin at a time and a place that is to be determined. They’ll continue to prioritize an effective team defense.
“Offensively, sometimes you make shots. Sometimes you don’t,” Ott said. “But defense can travel if we just continue focusing on that, I think we can take this thing a while.”
Bearcat girls basketball’s furthest playoff run was in 2013 when they appeared in the 4A state semifinals. Their 2025 regional semifinal birth is their furthest run since the 2019 season.
Argyle is too much for Mansfield Summit in Top 10 match-up
It was a battle of titans on Thursday night, Feb. 13, at the Aledo High School gym. Two of the top-ranked girls basketball teams in the state in Class 5A faced off.
When the dust finally cleared, Argyle, No. 8 in the state, according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, pulled away late to down No. 7 Mansfield Summit 44-30 in a 5A Division 2 area-round game.
Argyle (31-5) advances to the regional semifinals where the Eagles will face the winner of the El Paso Hanks (14-12)-Plainview (20-12) game that is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 14, afternoon.
Summit (30-6) jumped out to a 9-2 lead, but the Jaguars went cold from the floor for 5:18 starting midway through the first quarter until the 6:55 mark of the second quarter. Maya Williams ended the field-goal drought with a bucket, but by that time Argyle had a 15-13 lead.
“This was an incredible test,” said Argyle head coach Chance Westmoreland. “They’re ranked higher than us and have been all year long and have 30 wins.
“This is a game that, with a new with the new format, you get this game a lot earlier in the playoffs. We knew it was going to be tough, but I think playing (Denton) Ryan and playing the schedule that we did allowed us to be ready for the pressure they brought out there.”
The pace and level of play of the game was more suited for a state semifinal or championship game instead of a second-round contest.
Argyle slowly increased its lead from that point going up by as many as nine points. Summit closed it to within five points at 33-28 after a basket by Jamie Walker with 6:38 left in the game that forced Westmoreland to call a time out.
But after the stoppage, Kennedy Hafer and Wrigley Green each were fouled on made baskets and converted their free throws to put Argyle up 39-28 with 4:32 left.
Sophomore guards Green, Kensley Vest and Lexi Ehrhardt did a masterful job from that point protecting the ball and keeping it away from the Jaguars. Summit didn’t score in the final 3:33 of the game.
Hafer led all scorers with 15 points for Argyle with Green, Landry Murphy and Brooklyn Northeim pitching in six points each. Makayla Harris led Summit with 10 points with Lily Sheppard adding eight.
“This was a tough week because Granbury had a good team too,” said Westmoreland. “I just think our kids have got to continue to lock in and stay in the moment. I think if they do that then we’ve got a chance to do something special.”
