Introducing the Star-Telegram Volleyball Coach of the Year: Byron Nelson’s Brianne Groth
Introducing the 2024 Star-Telegram High School Volleyball Coach of the Year: Byron Nelson’s Brianne Groth.
Byron Nelson (40-1) did not drop a single set in the Class 6A Division II playoffs, sweeping through the competition en route to a state championship. The Bobcats ended the season as Max Preps’ No. 1 ranked team in the nation.
Byron Nelson’s opponents averaged 14.8 points per set throughout the playoffs. In one of the most dominant seasons in Texas volleyball history, the Bobcats dropped eight total sets.
Byron Nelson also claimed an undefeated District 4-6A championship while facing elite competition such as Southlake Carroll and Keller. The Bobcats, after dropping a set to Carroll, finished the season with 13 sweeps and extended their overall win streak to 36 games.
Byron Nelson’s sole loss of the season was to Highland Park in a three-set tournament match.
The championship team thrived without an abundance of star seniors. Several key players, such as setter Sophee Peterson, Kylie Kleckner, and Ashlyn Seay, are eligible to return next season.
Groth and the Bobcats also won a state title in the 2019 season.
