Area-round football games to watch: North Crowley stays local, Southlake Carroll in Abilene, more
The UIL Texas high school football area round is here, and teams from the Fort Worth-area are preparing for game day. Many teams are traveling to Abilene or Wichita Falls, but there are still games to watch in Dallas-Fort Worth.
Here are the area round games to watch.
North Crowley, Bowie, Aledo, Kennedale to stay local
North Crowley (10-0) has lofty goals and high expectations, and they have the talent and experience to deliver. The Panthers’ road won’t be easy, and eventually, they may have to defeat Duncanville, the reigning, defending Class 6A D1 state champion.
Byron Nelson was a tough first-round matchup, but a tremendous third quarter helped the Panthers secure the victory. Now, the Panthers will stay in Fort Worth to face Odessa Permian at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22 at Crowley ISD Stadium.
One player to watch is wide receiver Quentin Gibson, who tallied 174 yards and two touchdowns, mainly in the second half vs. Byron Nelson.
If North Crowley wins, the next opponent would be Coppell (11-0) or Lake Highlands (9-2). The path doesn’t get easier from there; Euless Trinity (10-1) and Allen (11-0) are still alive in the Region One bracket.
Another team that plays locally is Arlington Bowie (8-3), a team that won a bi-district for the first time since 2020 with a victory over Dallas Jesuit. Head coach Joseph Sam and company recently won a district title for the first time since 2012.
The Volunteers will face Hebron at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22 at Mustang-Panther Stadium. Bowie will look for its first area-round victory since the 2016 season.
The Class 5A D1 realm also has a local game: Aledo vs. Abilene at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22 at Newsom Stadium. The Bearcats played Abilene in the 2023 playoffs, defeating them 56-21.
If Aledo (10-1) is victorious, its next-round opponent will be Saginaw (11-0) or Tascosa (6-5).
The sole class 4A local game on Friday, Nov. 22, is Kennedale vs. Celina at Pennington Field. The Wildcats (6-5) are coming off a bi-district victory over Fort Worth Southwest.
Kennedale faced Celina in the 2022 area round, falling 34-28, and will look to emerge victorious in the rematch. The Bobcats (11-0) are undefeated District 7-4A D1 champions.
Area round in Abilene: FW Benbrook, Southlake Carroll, Crowley
Fort Worth Benbrook (10-1) recently won its first bi-district title in program history. Now, they’re gearing up for an Class 4A D2 area round matchup vs. Midland Greenwood (10-1) scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 22, at Abilene’s Sandifer Stadium.
On Friday, Nov. 22, at Abilene Christian, Southlake Carroll will face Wolfforth Frenship. The Dragons and Tigers clashed in 2023, and Carroll dominated, securing a 49-14 victory.
Southlake Carroll (11-0), a Class 6A D2 title contender, will face Hebron or Arlington Bowie in the next round.
The final game in Abilene is Crowley vs. Midland, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 at Shotwell Stadium. The Eagles (7-4) recently won their first bi-district title in 11 seasons and will look to continue the success vs. the Bulldogs (8-3).
Crowley will face Denton Guyer (8-3) or Richardson Pearce (9-2) if victorious.
Wichita Falls games: Saginaw, Richland
Saginaw made school history in the Class 5A D1 bi-district round, winning its first playoff game in school history. In arguably the wildest game of the year, the Rough Riders scored twice in the final minutes to stun Azle.
Now, Saginaw (11-0) will look to extend its magical season with a potential matchup with Aledo looming.
Saginaw will face Amarillo Tascosa at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22 at Wichita Falls’ Memorial Stadium. Tascosa (6-5) defeated El Paso Americas 30-9 to advance.
Another Class 5A D1 game will take place in Wichita Falls. Richland, a title contender, will face Amarillo at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at Memorial Stadium.
