Week 10 storylines: Four massive Class 4A games, battles for playoff spots, more
Week 10 of the Texas high school football season is here.
Playoff races are starting to get serious as the end of the regular season draws closer. Here are four things to keep an eye on throughout the Fort Worth-area.
A massive Friday for Class 4A football
There are four massive Class 4A matchups between teams in the greater Fort Worth-area on Friday, Nov. 1. All teams involved are ranked in the Star-Telegram’s Class 4A rankings.
Glen Rose (6-2, 3-0) will face Benbrook (8-0, 3-0) at 7:30 p.m. at Clark Stadium. The Tigers and Bobcats, in district play, are the only undefeated District 4-4A D2 teams. A win will guarantee a share of the district championship.
Brock (8-0, 3-0) and Graham (7-1, 3-0), District 3-4A D2 squads, are also undefeated in district play. Similarly to Benbrook and Glen Rose, the Eagles and Steers can clinch a share of the district title with a win.
Brock and Graham are ranked No. 2 and No. 5, respectively, in the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Class 4A D2 statewide rankings. The Steers will host the Eagles with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
After rising to Class 4A after years of dominance in Class 3A, Brock is looking to prove they can compete with the best competition in a larger classification.
In the division one realm, Stephenville (7-1, 2-0) will face Brownwood (4-3, 1-1) at Tarleton Memorial Stadium with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Stephenville, No. 1 in the Star-Telegram’s Class 4A rankings, can clinch a share of the District 4-4A D1 title with a victory.
The Yellow Jackets and Lions have a storied rivalry dubbed the Battle of 377, with the first game on record taking place in 1937. The two programs have 13 combined UIL state championships. Brownwood leads the all-time series 46-34-2, but Stephenville has won the last four contests.
Another big rivalry game is Deactur (5-3, 4-0) and Springtown (8-1, 5-0). Both teams are undefeated in District 5-4A play; Decatur can clinch a share with a win but will have to defeat Fort Worth Southwest in week 11 to win it outright.
Since Springtown has a bye in week 11, it can clinch the district title outright with a victory. The Eagles and Porcupines will clash at Eagle Stadium in Decatur with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Mansfield Legacy looks to clinch playoff spot, more from 3-6A
Mansfield Legacy (2-7, 2-3) did not win a single non-district game; the Broncos are a good reminder those games don’t necessarily mean anything when it comes to the UIL playoffs. With a win over Mansfield Lake Ridge on Nov. 1 at Newsome Stadium, the Broncos will move closer to clinching a playoff spot out of District 3-6A.
Another 3-6A squad, North Crowley (8-0, 4-0), remains at the top of the Star-Telegram’s Class 6A rankings. The Panthers will face Mansfield (7-1, 3-1) and look to stay undefeated and, depending on results, set up a clash for the district title against Crowley, a rival, in week 10.
Euless Trinity, Justin Northwest battle for positioning
Euless Trinity (7-1, 5-1) has already clinched a playoff spot out of District 4-6A. Still, the Trojans are fighting for positioning. They will face Justin Northwest (6-2, 4-2) at 7 p.m. on Nov. 1 at Northwest ISD Stadium.
Northwest can clinch a playoff spot with a victory. Keller Timber Creek (4-4, 2-4) is still in contention for a playoff spot, but it needs a Northwest loss to Trinity. That will set up a week 11 regular-season finale clash between the Texans and Falcons, with the winner heading to the playoffs.
The district championship favorite, Southlake Carroll (9-0, 7-0), can clinch the title with a victory over Keller Central (1-7, 0-6). The contest is scheduled for Nov. 1 at p.m. and will occur at Keller ISD Stadium.
