Frisco Wakefield stuns Mansfield Timberview, eliminates Wolves in bi-district round
There will be no deep playoff run this year for Mansfield Timberview.
The Wolves, a regional finalist last year, were knocked off in the bi-district playoff by visiting Frisco Wakefield, 21-18, on Friday.
The night started well for the Wolves playing at their home field – Vernon Newsom Stadium – by scoring the first two times they got the ball.
However, the Wolverines (9-2) got just enough passing from Brennan Myer to pull away and move on to the Class 5A Division I playoffs. Up next will be a matchup with Lancaster, a team that beat La Porte, 27-13. Wakeland is riding a six-game winning streak now.
Timberview (9-2) got the ball first and scored on the opening drive but had a few hiccups – three offensive penalties. However, Tyler Madison took a run up the middle for a 53-yard score. Emma Young’s point after attempt gave the Wolves a 7-0 lead.
Two plays later, Wakeland tied it at 7-7 on a 77-yard touchdown pass from Myer to Donovan Woolen, who snared it with his left hand and outran the defense.
The Wolves got a 46-yard run from Jaylon Woods to get into the Wakeland red zone on the third play of the next drive. However, at 1st-and-goal from the 10, the offense had another offside call and two rushes for negative yards. Young booted a 32-yard field goal to give the Wolves the lead back.
The lead remained with Timberview until the second. A fumble late in the first quarter was recovered by Wakeland. They drove down inside the Wolves’ red zone and on the second play of the second quarter and Myer escaped pressure, throwing to Woolen in the back of the end zone, by the goal post, for a 7-yard score.
That made it 14-10 and Wakeland never trailed again.
Timberview had a 12-play drive right after falling behind, but a fourth-down attempt at the Wakeland 24-yard line came up 2 yards short of the first-down marker.
The teams traded interceptions and the score was 14-10 at the half.
Myer was 4-for-5 passing for 55 yards on the opening drive of the second half and his 23-yard touchdown to Ivan Molina extended the lead to 21-10.
Timberview had the ball only three times in the second half with drives ending on an interception, a punt and a touchdown.
On the final drive, Woods got the ball five straight times and the last was a 1-yard touchdown. Quarterback Zuric Humes connected with Cameron Bates on the 2-point conversion to make it 21-18.
Myer had three first-down conversions while a defensive penalty on Timberview turned a 3rd-and-22 situation into another first down for the Wolverines. Wakeland ran 11 total plays and ran out the clock.
