Miss any action from week 11 of Texas high school football? Here’s a roundup of several Fort Worth-area contests.
Keller 34, Haltom 28
Keller put up 21 points in the first quarter and had to survive Haltom’s comeback bid to claim the final playoff spot in 4-6A in a winner-take-all matchup on Thursday night.
A quick start allowed Keller (7-3, 4-3) to jump on Haltom early and lead 21-7 going into the fourth quarter. The lead extended to 24-7 early in the second on a Sam Keltner 30-yard field goal and stayed that way until late the frame when Ashton Moore connected with Vudrico Roberson for a 32-yard touchdown to make it 24-14 at the half.
The teams traded touchdowns in the third to preserve the 10-point lead for Keller. Keller then added a field goal to go up 34-21 over Haltom.
Haltom mounted a late charge, scoring with 3:03 left in the game on a 60-yard touchdown pass. On the ensuing series, a crucial penalty extended the Keller drive and allowed it to eat the rest of the clock and clinch a playoff spot.
Cameron Rayford rushed the ball 20 times for Keller for 141 yards and two scores as Keller moves onto the tournament where it will be in Division I and meets the No. 1 seed from 3-6A, North Crowley.
Denton Ryan 28, Justin Northwest 14
Looking to wrap up the No. 2 seed in 3-5A DI, Northwest could not keep its win streak alive and earn a first-round home playoff game as it fell 28-14 to Denton Ryan on Thursday night.
Northwest (8-2, 6-2) opened the game with a touchdown run from Nate Jean to take the early lead. But from there, the offense was shut down by the Ryan (7-2, 6-2) defense as it kept Northwest off the scoreboard until the early portions of the fourth quarter.
That defense held Ife Durodoye to just 59 yards on 16 carries and no touchdowns despite entering the game averaging more than 160 yards and 2.6 touchdowns a game. The entire offense mustered just 190 yards while giving up 449 yards to Ryan.
Northwest will travel to play Midlothian in the Bi-District Round at 7 p.m. Friday at MISD Stadium.
Kennedale 14, Fort Worth Dunbar 7
In a battle of unbeaten teams in District 6-4A DI, Kennedale was able to edge past Dunbar 14-7 to claim the district title on Thursday night.
Kennedale (7-3, 7-0) struck gold twice in the first half and looked primed to run away from Dunbar (7-3, 6-1) early on.
Dunbar’s defense settled in and kept Kennedale off the scoreboard, but its offense could not break through the Kennedale defense until the fourth quarter for its lone score.
The win for Kennedale will have it matching up with Alvarado, while Dunbar will meet La Vega in the Bi-District Round next week.
Burleson Centennial 41, Azle 16
Needing a win to clinch the fourth playoff spot for 3-5A Division I, Burleson Centennial was able to easily handle Azle on Friday night 41-16.
Burleson (7-3, 5-3) jumped out to an early 21-0 lead before Azle was able to put a couple of scores on the board to make it 28-13 going into the half.
Late in the third, Centennial extended its lead to 35-13 and added another touchdown following an Azle field goal to put the game away for good.
Aledo 59, Brewer 13
The beat goes on for Aledo as it wrapped up another undefeated district slate as well as an undefeated regular season with a 59-13 win over Brewer on Friday night.
Regardless of the outcome for either team, Aledo was already slated to host Killeen Shoemaker at 7 p.m. Thursday at Tim Buchanan Stadium in Aledo.
Arlington 52, Arlington Sam Houston 0
Arlington secured a playoff spot with an emphatic 52-0 win over Sam Houston Thursday night, thanks to a big night from Isaiah Robertson.
The win sets up a first-round matchup against Highland Park at 7 p.m. Friday at Highland Stadium.
Boswell 55, Chisholm Trail 24
Needing a win to clinch a playoff spot, Boswell was able to pull away from Chisolm Trail thanks to a 20-0 run in the second quarter.
Boswell (6-3, 4-3) turned a 14-10 game into a 34-10 halftime lead that was insurmountable for Chisholm Trail.
The teams traded two touchdowns apiece in the third and Boswell added another in the fourth to claim the win and the No. 1 seed out of 3-6A Division I.
Boswell will meet Southlake Carroll, the No. 2 seed from 4-6A next week. Time, date and location is still to be determined.
