Colleyville Heritage hoped to end their district play undefeated. O.D. Wyatt hoped to gain momentum heading into the playoffs. Both coaches knew this game could help their teams get prepared for the postseason.

“O.D. Wyatt is a quality team, they are 7-2 coming in,” Colleyville Heritage head coach Jerry Edwards said. “They are a playoff team and so we treated it like a playoff atmosphere.”

This year under a new head coach, Colleyville Heritage will take the first-seed playoff spot. They were the third-seed last year.

“Anytime you play the game, and you can go 9-1 in the state of Texas playing high school football it is a testament to these kids and the work to do all the little things we’ve asked them to do,” Edwards said.

The Panthers will play next Friday, November 10 at Mustang-Panther Stadium. They are still waiting to learn their opponent. But for this final district game, they were focused on the Chapparals, who have over 30 seniors on their team.

“I call these my pandemic babies, all of those kids started or played as freshmen,” Wyatt head coach Zachary Criss said. “We went 1-9 their freshman year and we haven’t looked back since. We made the playoffs every year after that. This is my family for life.”

Wyatt will take on Argyle at Argyle next Thursday, November 9 for their first round of the playoffs.

“We got a good look tonight at what we are going to see next week,” Criss said. “We get a whole full week of practice again against something similar.”

The Chaparrals’ practice leading into this game paid off. Not even thirty seconds into the game, Wyatt scored the first touchdown of the evening. Quarterback Anthani Harrison connected with wide receiver Jeremiah Boone who ran from near Wyatt’s end zone all the way down the field to score a touchdown with 11:45 left in the first quarter.

The next scoring play came when Colleyville Heritage’s quarterback Bodey Weaver threw the ball to wide receiver Hayden Golden who ran 12 yards into the end zone with 6:17 remaining in the first quarter. The extra point by Ryan Zuckert was good. This gave the Panthers a 7-6 lead.

Colleyville scored another touchdown with 11:07 remaining in the second quarter.

Boone scored his second touchdown of the night for Wyatt, running halfway across the field into the end zone at 10:55. The Chaparrals knew they needed to go for two to tie the game. Dartagnan K. Crawford passed the ball to Mikhel Davis who was waiting in the end zone. The score was tied at 14 all.

Later in the second quarter, Xavier Walker intercepted a pass from Colleyville Heritage running 40 yards to the Panther’s one-yard line. This set up the next touchdown scored by Jorvorskie Lane Jr. as he ran straight through Colleyville Heritage’s defense. The Chaparrals took the lead 21-14.

“I am really proud of these guys and how they came out and played hard,” Criss said. “Can’t be any prouder of anybody than I am of them.”

The final score before intermission was made by Colleyville Heritage’s Ryan Keleher. Both teams were tied again. The score was 21-21.

“We didn’t panic at halftime, we knew we had it in the bag we came out and scored the touchdown we needed and got the win,” Edwards said.

Much of the third quarter was riddled with penalties on both sides of the ball. With 3:03 remaining in the third quarter, Panthers’ quarterback Luke Ullrich made it into the end zone, pushing through the Chaparrals’ defense. This would be the final score of the game. Colleyville Heritage won 28-21.

“We did what we needed to do to win the game and get ready for playoffs,” Ullrich said.

The Panthers are proud of how they ended the regular season.

“This year we are the undefeated undisputed district champs,” Edwards said.
