Fort Worth Brewer football’s third quarter surge not enough in loss to Frisco Wakeland
FRISCO -- A huge-third quarter rally by the Fort Worth Brewer Bears (0-2, 0-0) was not enough as they fell 34-27 to the Frisco Wakeland Wolverines (2-0, 0-0) in a 5A non-district matchup Thursday night at Kuykendall Stadium.
Trailing 28-10 at intermission, Fort Worth Brewer could not have asked for a better third quarter. Jovan Sparkman’s 13-yard TD run capped an 8-play, 64 yard drive to begin the second half. Then the Bears defense came up with the big plays. Defensive Lineman Chico Siavii recovered a fumble on Wakeland’s next possession and Jaden Garrett’s two-yard TD run culminated a 38-yard 10-play march. Garrett’s two-point conversion reception from Jordan Clark left the Bears with just a 28-25 deficit with 2:04 left in the third quarter.
Fort Worth Brewer’s Malik Covington recovered a Wakeland fumble on the next series, setting the Bears up at their own 45. They drove to the Wolverine five-yard line, but missed a game-tying field goal with 9:25 left in the contest.
Sophomore Grayson Myer hauled in a 24-yard TD pass from older brother and senior Brennan Myer with 6:04 remaining for the Wolverines. But the Bears blocked their third PAT attempt in the game, and this time Joshua Field returned it all the way to narrow the gap to 34-27, making the contest a one-score game.
Grayson Myer then came up with an interception on defense with 2:52 left and the Wolverines picked up one first down. The Bears had to use their remaining timeouts, and Wakeland was able to run out the clock.
Brewer had a rough start to begin the contest, as Wolverine Grayson Myer brought back the opening kickoff 92 yards for a TD. On Fort Worth Brewer’s three-and-out initial possession, the punt snap rolled out of the end zone for a safety. The Bears ensuing kickoff set up the Wolverines at their own 49, and Brennan Myer immediately connected with younger brother Grayson Myer on a 51-yard TD strike that left Brewer in a 15-0 deficit just 2:27 into the game.
Fort Worth Brewer settled down and Jaden Garrett rushed in for a 10-yard TD that culminated a seven-play, 50-yard drive to narrow the deficit to 15-7.
Wakeland’s Brennan Myer tossed a pair of second-period TDs -- 11 yards to Ryder Treadway and 23 yards to Ashdyn Kahouch -- sandwiched around a 26-yard Fort Worth Brewer field goal by Bryson Barrow that left the Bears with a 28-10 deficit at intermission.
The Bears had reached the Wolverines eight-yard line 12 seconds beforethe half; however, with no timeouts, Clark was sacked and Brewer was unable to get off another play.
