Girls

Glen Rose 58, Stephenville 31

The Tigers, No. 1 in the Class 4A state rankings, sent a message to the rest of the state after a rout over No. 8 Stephenville in District 6-4A.

Glen Rose improves to 30-1 and 4-0.

The Honeybees fall to 26-3 and 3-1.

Stephenville had no answer for 6-4 post Aimee Flippen, who scored a game-high 26 points. Flippen, a junior, did most of her scoring inside the paint, towering over most of the Honeybee defenders.

After the lead was cut to 6-2 after a pair of Stephenville free throws, Glen Rose scored the next 16 points. The Tigers led 16-2 and after their run, were up 22-2.

Grace Booth, who had 11 points, added a bucket followed by a putback from Brooklynn Peterson. Booth got a loose ball and converted another score to go up 14-2. Lily Melton just beat the first-quarter buzzer and Flippen added another basket to make it 22-2 midway through the second quarter.

Stephenville didn’t have a field goal in the first quarter and Kyla Ray hit a layup for its first with 4:06 left in the second.

Abby Staples hit Sam Ellenberger late and the Tigers owned a 31-5 lead at intermission. The Honeybees got some offense going in the third. Lucy Epinoza hit a layup and three to cut it to 38-19. Booth pushed the lead back up 22 and Melton beat another buzzer as Glen Rose led 43-21 after the third.

Melton also scored 11 for the Tigers.

Boys

Burleson Centennial 59, Mansfield Summit 58

The Spartans held on against a fourth-quarter Summit rally to win the Top 25 showdown in District 8-5A.

Centennial, No. 19 in the Class 5A rankings, improved to 23-4 overall and 9-1 in district.

Summit, No. 3, dropped to 24-3 and 9-1.

It looked like Centennial had the game in hand with a 14-12 lead after the first quarter and 37-25 lead at halftime. Both teams scored 15 in the third and the Spartans were still up 12 after the third.

However, the Summit D plus Centennial offense woes in the fourth, helped pull the Jaguars close. The Spartans only scored seven points in the final period versus Summit’s 14.

But Centennial was able to make enough stops late to hang on for the big victory.

Iverson Moore led all scorers with 18 points along with four rebounds and three assists for Centennial. Kendall Lawrence added 12 points and five boards. Zach Diaz and Ty’Jae Minter each scored eight and Abram Hicks chipped in seven.

Summit was led by three players in double figures David Terrell (16), Richard Lemboye (15) and Franck Emmou (14).
