Brian Gosset: Biggest things from the fourth round of the playoffs in the Fort Worth-area
The playoffs continue as Fort Worth-area teams look to march toward the state championship. A lot of action took place with impressive wins and big upsets, plus top recruits proving why they’re some of the best in the state.

Best win
Brock 30, Whitesboro 19
In a district rematch, the Eagles defeated the Bearcats to win the Class 3A Division 1 Region 1 final. Brock clinches a spot in the state semifinals for the sixth time in program history.
Reid Watkins scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns and Jhett Jones and Colt Matlock had interceptions in the final period.
Brock trailed 12-7 at halftime and 12-10 after three quarters before the Eagles put up three touchdowns in the final 11 minutes of the game. Tyler Moody also threw a 33-yard touchdown to Jones early in the fourth.
Watkins’ first TD of the fourth gave Brock the lead for good. Jones picked off Whitesboro on the ensuing drive and Watkins scored again to give the Eagles an 11-point edge. Matlock finished it off with an interception with under a minute left.

State semifinal history
Aledo
Aledo is going to the state semifinals for the 19th time in program history and 15th time in the last 19 seasons. The Bearcats had gone every year since 2013 until they were defeated by eventual 5A D2 champ South Oak Cliff in the third round last season.
Argyle
Argyle is making its second semifinal appearance in the last three seasons. The Eagles won the 4A D1 championship in 2020. It will be the seventh time to the semis in program history.
Decatur
Decatur is back in the state semifinals for the first time since 2018.
Glen Rose
Glen Rose is making program history with its first trip to the semifinals.
Brock
Brock is in the semis for the sixth time in eight seasons. The Eagles went to the 3A D1 final last season.
What a career
Southlake Carroll running back Owen Allen is the program’s all-time leading rusher and he went over 100 yards for the 42nd time during his final game as the Dragons lost to Guyer on Saturday.
According to the team’s Max Preps, Allen finishes his career with 7,700 yards rushing and 120 touchdowns. He has 8,216 total yards and 122 TDs. Allen set career marks in rushing yards (2,226), rushing TDs (37) and rushing yards per game (159). He played in 53 games.
Freshman: 1,266 yards, 23 TDs
Sophomore: 2,063 yards, 28 TDs
Junior: 2,145 yards, 32 TDs
Senior: 2,226 yards, 37 TDs
Tigers rolling
Glen Rose defeated Monahans 62-14 to win the Class 4A D2 Region 1 final. The Tigers improved to 13-1 with their only loss coming in Week 4 against Brownwood (17-3).
Since then, Glen Rose has won 10 in a row.
During this stretch, Glen Rose has scored 60 points five times and 50 points eight times. Its closest game came in Week 5 against Springtown (28-14) followed by wins of 69 points, 34, 50, 58, 29, 41, 51, 25 and 48.
Turning it around
Three area teams, Aledo, Decatur and Brock are in the semifinals despite opening the season with losing streaks. The Bearcats started 0-2 with losses against Guyer and TAPPS D1 champ Parish Episcopal.
They lost to Guyer 44-14.
Aledo has won 12 straight games since.
Decatur started the season 0-3 with losses to Anna, Rider and Stephenville. The Eagles lost to Anna 54-35 and Stephenville 52-34. They have 11 straight games.
Brock started the season 0-4 with losses to four teams that have been state ranked this season, Pleasant Grove, Hirschi, Wimberley and Gunter. The Eagles have won 10 games in a row.
