Argyle girls beat Brewer in state showdown and more from Fort Worth-area basketball

GIRLS

Argyle 43, Brewer 31

Gabby Campbell and Ashlin Crabtree led Argyle with 11 points apeice as the Eagles won a defensive bout against Brewer 43-31 at Argyle on Tuesday night.

Argyle improved to 6-3. The Eagles are No. 8 in the Class 5A state rankings and No. 1 in the area. Brewer, No. 10 and No. 5 respectively, dropped its first game (8-1).

Brewer didn’t make a field goal in the first quarter and didn’t get its first until the 4:20 mark of the second quarter. However, Argyle didn’t fare any better as the Eagles only led 7-2 after the first quarter. Eryn McKinzie hit Brewer’s first basket with a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 10-7.

Aolani Woldai assisted on a Julie Kasonga mid range jumper to make it 10-9. After an Argyle free throw, McKinzie hit a layup that tied the game at 11.

Campbell scored five straight, including a 3-point play as Argyle led 16-11 at halftime.

The lead grew to 20-12 on a Mallory Millington layup and then 24-14 late in the third quarter. Woldai’s jumper and McKinzie’s steal and basket cut it to 24-18 at the end of three.

Argyle went back up 10 at 30-20 on a Kennedy Hafer layup with 5:13 left in the fourth quarter. Two free throws from the Bears and a 3-point play by Kailee Carr made it 32-27 with under two minutes to play.

Crabtree hit two free throws and back-to-back threes that gave Argyle its largest lead of the night at 40-29 late. Millington and KK Jones added eight points each for the Eagles while McKinzie led all scorers with a game-high 16.

Argyle reached the Class 4A state championship game last season.

The Eagles made the move to Class 5A for the first time.

Midlothian 50, Summit 46

The Panthers allowed just 10 points in the final quarter to hang on and beat the Jaguars. Bailey Davis and Elise Jones led Midlo with 16 and 13 points, respectively.

Destiny Whitaker dropped 28 points and 15 rebounds for the Jags.

Midlothian outscored Summit 13-8 in the second and 14-10 in the fourth.

Bell 38, Timber Creek 30

Katelyn Tietjen hit five 3-pointers to lead the Blue Raiders with 17 points as the Blue Raiders defeated the Falcons at home.

Leah Andrews added 11 and Grace Oma chipped in seven.

Megan Coffman led the Falcons with 10.

Bell had a quick start while TC couldn’t buy a basket. The Raiders led 15-2 after the first quarter. TC managed to cut it to 20-12 at halftime, but Bell outscored Timber Creek 16-7 in the third.

TC outscored Bell 11-2 in the fourth, but it was little too late.

Glen Rose 49, Boswell 44

The Tigers, who entered the night No. 1 in the latest Class 4A state rankings, improved to 11-0 this season after taking down the Pioneers.

Aimee Flippen led all scorers with 20 points.

The Spartans exploded in the second half to win by 24 points.

Both teams were tied at 8 after the first quarter and then trailed by two at halftime. Then Centennial scored 27 in the third and 18 in the fourth.

The Spartans held Trinity Leadership to nine points in the third.

Jared Cox led the way with 15 points, five rebounds and three blocks. Ty’Jae Minter added 12 points, three rebounds and three assists. Abram Hicks chipped in 10 points, six rebounds and six assists. Kendall Lawrence nearly had a double-double with nine points and 10 boards.

Centennial improves to 7-2.

Central 55, Grapevine 45

Only four players scored for the Chargers, but it was enough to beat the Mustangs by 10.

Nehemiah Weber led Central with 17 points. Aiden Wall added 16 followed by Dominic Lampton’s 14 and Brandon Disney Harper’s eight.

Central had a strong start with a 19-7 edge after the first eight minutes. Grapevine pulled within three after outscoring Central 20-11 in the third. But Central won the fourth 16-9.

Matthew Woodcock led Grapevine with 14 points.

Azle 49, Decatur 41

Gavin Dean scored a game-high 21 points as the Hornets rallied to beat the Eagles. Gunner Crow added eight points while Jayden Rollins had seven.

After Decatur led 12-5 after the first quarter, Azle outscored the Eagles 44-29 in the final three quarters.

Argyle 42, Ponder 35

The Eagles hung on to beat the Class 3A state-ranked Lions at home. After leading 34-16 in the second half, Ponder went on an 11-0 run to pull within 34-27 with six minutes left in the fourth.

Hutch Burns knocked down a jumper on the next Argyle possession to snap the Eagles scoring drought. Burns led the team with 17 points with 11 coming in the first quarter.

Argyle opened with a 6-0 start. 6-8 sophomore Kash Polk hit a 3-pointer and the Eagles led 16-7 after the first quarter. Burns hit a three just before the buzzer.

Jayson Demcher had an offensive put back and Evan Harbach scored in the paint to push the lead to 25-12 at halftime. Demcher scored 14 for Argyle and Polk added seven. Polk has an offer from Texas A&M.

Ponder started the week No. 10 in the 3A rankings.
