Lake Worth holds off Alvarado in double OT and more from the Fort Worth-area playoffs

Jesuit 41, Arlington 14

An early 14-3 lead for Arlington could not hold as Jesuit scored 38 straight on the way to a 41-14 win to open the 6A Division 2 bi-district round.

After Jesuit (9-2) opened the game with a field goal on its first drive, Arlington (6-5) got touchdown runs by Isaiah Roberts for 45 yards and Sam Semi for 16 yards on back-to-back possessions to take a 14-3 lead after the first quarter.

From there, it was all Jesuit as the Rangers scored on its next two possessions to reclaim the lead at 17-14 and led 20-14 at the half. Arlington punted on five of its possessions in the second and third quarters and had three turnover on downs and ended the game with an interception.

Lone Star 55, Richland 15

Bennett Fryman’s four total touchdowns powered Lone Star to a 55-15 win over Richland in the 5A Division 1 bi-district round of the playoffs.

Lone Star scored on its first three possessions and forced a turnover on downs and two punts within the first quarter to lead 21-0 going into the second quarter. The second frame was more of the same as the Rangers (9-2) outscored Richland (8-3) 27-7 to hold a 48-7 lead at halftime.

Fryman finished with 254 total yards and three passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown to lead Lone Star, which out-gained the Royals 467-170 on the night.

Bryce Morton and Michael Turner led Richland with a combined 21 carries for 94 yards and a score.

Lone Star will meet Longview in the area round.

Lake Worth 23, Alvarado 20 (2OT)

In a low-scoring game at Apogee Stadium, Lake Worth pulled out a 23-20 double-overtime win over Alvarado in the 4A Division 1 bi-district round.

After forcing a fumble in the second overtime frame, the Bullfrogs (9-2) went the conservative route and settled for a game-winning field goal to take down Alvarado (5-6).

Alvarado had a chance to win the game in regulation after Lake Worth punted the ball minus-6 yards to set the Indians up at the Bullfrogs’ 26 yard-line with 36 seconds left. But Alvarado fumbled and Lake Worth recovered to force the overtime.

Lake Worth meets Dallas Carter in the area round next week.

Wakeland 42, Birdville 28

Brennan Myer’s five touchdown passes guided Wakeland to a 42-28 win over Birdville in the 5A Division 1 bi-district round.

Wakeland (7-4) was able to turn the game in its favor after getting a touchdown to end the first half to lead 21-14 and then forced a takeaway to begin the second half, which led to another touchdown to go up 28-14.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Birdville (8-3) drew within one score with 7:12 left, but the Wolverines responded with a score of their own, forced another takeaway and added another touchdown – all within a minute of game action – to lead 42-28.

Wakeland plays Port Arthur Memorial in the area round.

Centennial 56, Lake Belton 28

Defense set the tone for Centennial as it doubled up Lake Belton 56-28 in the 5A Division 1 bi-district round.

On the game’s first play, Aidan Hicks grabbed an interception and two plays later, Centennial (10-1) grabbed a 7-0 lead on a Jahiem Ababio 21-yard touchdown run.

Another Spartans takeaway led to an Elijah Zeh 11-yard touchdown run to give Centennial a 14-0 early in the first quarter.

Lake Belton (8-3) fought back to tie the game at 14 going into the second quarter, and from there it was all Spartans, outscoring the Broncos 21-7 in the frame and then 21-7 in the second half to coast to the win.

The flexbone offense for Centennial was unstoppable as Zeh rushed for 184 yards and three

touchdowns, Ababio added 149 yards and three scores along with Phillip Hamilton contributing with 137 yards and two scores.

Midlothian 51, Northwest 34

A 31-point second quarter turned a close game early into a route for Midlothian as it downed Northwest

51-34 in the 5A Division 1 bi-district round.

Northwest (6-5) grabbed a 7-6 lead late in the first quarter but then Midlothian (11-0) rattled off 31 straight points in the second quarter to go up 37-7 before a late touchdown by the Texans made it 37-13.

Midlothian then added two more early, third quarter touchdowns to go up 51-13 and put the game well out of reach. Northwest scored the last 21 points, but it was far too late for any serious comeback bid.

De’ago Benson and Chad Ragle guided the Panthers’ offense, combining for 31 carries and 324 yards and five scores. Jake Strong finished the night throwing for 317 yards on 25 completions and four touchdowns, with his main target being Kenan Reil for 118 yards and two scores.

Midlothian meets Amarillo in the area round next week.
