Duncanville boys basketball team stripped of 2022 state title, head coach suspended
The Duncanville boys basketball program was stripped of its 2021-22 UIL Class 6A state championship for using an ineligible player, following Monday’s UIL State Executive Committee meeting.
Duncanville coach David Peavy also received a one-year suspension.
The program was given a three-year probation and a public reprimand.
The girls basketball team was also reprimanded on Monday.
Anthony Black, a 5-star combo guard who’s now at Arkansas, moved to Duncanville from Coppell during the summer of 2021 and was initially ruled ineligible for the season.
The family and Duncanville fought back-and-forth with the UIL, but Black did end up playing including in the state championship. The Panthers are forced to forfeit every game Black played in, which includes the 6A title game, a 69-49 win over McKinney.
The Duncanville school district issued a statement Monday evening, “At all times that the student played for Duncanville, the player did so under a valid court order. Although this matter is still pending, the district disagrees that it violated any UIL rules by playing a student whose eligibility was the subject of a valid court order.”
Added Duncanville superintendent Marc Smith, “These are significant and unprecedented consequences for both programs, and students will suffer the most from today’s decisions.”
Black, who was also a McDonald’s All-American, was voted state championship game MVP with a team-high 17 points on 9 of 11 shooting from the free-throw line. He had nine points, four boards, three assists, three blocks and three steals during a 50-36 win over Humble Atascocita in the state semifinal.
The Panthers went 35-1 with their third state title in the past four seasons. Four if you count the co-championship during the 2020 COVID year. Their only loss last season came in overtime to Richardson in the Whataburger tournament final. Black made an appearance in the second half.
Duncanville has gone 127-13 since Peavy’s arrival in 2018.
The UIL boys basketball season starts Nov. 11.
According to Max Preps, the Panthers open at home against San Antonio Brennan on Nov. 12. Duncanville is ranked No. 1 in the 6A preseason poll by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.
