Fort Worth Eastern Hills secures most wins in 22 years in blowout over Castleberry
Needing a win to keep its playoff dreams alive, Fort Worth Eastern Hills came out fired up on senior night, helping those seniors to a 41-13 win over Castleberry in a District 6-4A D1 game on Thursday night at Scarborough-Handley Field.
For the moment, Eastern Hills breaks a tie with Western Hills for fourth place in the district standings. Western Hills, which owns the head-to-head 30-28, will play Kennedale on Saturday.
With one of the first plays of the game, Eastern Hills (6-3, 4-2) quarterback Kenwaun Durst was intercepted by defensive back Miguel Huerta. After the interception, Castleberry (1-8, 1-5) was forced into a punt situation. Eastern Hills muffed the punt and it was recovered by Castleberry’s AJ Silva on the 5.
Only two plays later, running back Miguel Arroyo rushed it in for a touchdown. The extra point was good which made the score 7-0 in favor of Castleberry with 3:36 left to play in the first quarter.
After the kickoff, the Highlanders fought back and scored on a 84-yard passing play to wide receiver Prince Hill, and with the extra point the score was tied at 7 with 2:55 left in the first.
The Highlanders’ momentum kept going when Edward Blanton went for a 37-yard touchdown to end the first quarter, giving EHHS a 14-7 lead.
Another interception by Huerta in the middle of the second quarter gave the Lions momentum to drive down the field and have Daniel Torres kick a field goal from the 12-yard-line to cut it to 14-10 with 4:20 left in the second quarter.
On the Castleberry kickoff, Eastern Hills returner Antonio Baker took it all the way to the opposing 40-yard-line. On a designed quarterback run Durst rushed it in for a 12-yard touchdown with halftime on the way and Eastern Hills led 20-10.
After halftime, the Lions came to a fourth down at their own 41 and went for a fake punt thrown to Riley Bentley who took it all the way to the opposing 16.
Castleberry was forced to kick a field goal and Torres came out and got the job done making the score 20-13 Eastern Hills with 8:30 left on the clock in the third quarter.
Right after the field goal, Eastern Hills’ kickoff team struck back and Balton took it all the way back to the end zone for a touchdown that made the score 27-13 with 8:20 left in the third.
At the start of the fourth quarter, Castleberry drove all the way down to the 18 and Demetrius Valadez threw an interception in the end zone which was caught by defensive back Xavian Redd.
Then Durst rushed it in for a 27-yard touchdown with 7:13 left on the clock that made it 34-13.
With 1:12 remaining, the final score of the game happened when Eastern Hills wide receiver Montrell McGilveary caught an 11-yard reception for a touchdown.
The six wins for Eastern Hills are the program’s most in 22 years.
The Highlanders will end the regular season next week at Lake Worth.
