Fort Worth Dunbar picks up big victory over Lake Worth to stay in district title race
The Lake Worth Bullfrogs (7-2 overall, 5-1 District 6-4A D1) took on Dunbar (5-4, 5-1) Friday night at Scarborough-Handley Field to defend their first place ranking in the district. The Dunbar Wildcats, currently third in the district, hoped to secure their spot in the playoffs as the Wildcats got a huge win, 14-10.
The game was offset by lightning and severe weather conditions, but when the game started it took off with a bolt.
The rain-trodden game started with Dunbar in possession, quickly switching to Lake Worth after a pass interception. Possession went back to Dunbar after a fumble near the 20-yard line. It was then recovered again by Lake Worth at the 20, with Erza Nursa kicking it in for a field goal with 3:54 left in the first quarter, putting the first points on the board. The Bullfrogs led 3-0.
It goes back to Dunbar, when Murray Moore ran it in with 21 seconds left in the quarter. This play made him the all-time leading rusher in the district. The quarter ended 7-3, Dunbar.
“I had to make plays where I had to make plays,” Moore said. “Where my team needed me most, I showed up the most.”
Moore wasn’t the only Wildcat making plays as the second quarter started with Dunbar’s Damon Stafford getting ejected from the game for a personal foul, pushing a receiver out of bounds at the 40-yard line.
Another personal foul was called on Dunbar, this time against Moore, with the Wildcats receiving a 15-yard penalty, on Lake Worth’s fourth down.
Then with 3:31 left in the half, quarterback Donte Resse threw a bullet to Damion Moore, who ran it in for Lake Worth’s first touchdown and the score was 10-7 Lake Worth.
The next half kicked off a bit slower. The first action came in the fourth quarter with Dunbar pushing in the first touchdown of the half with 11:40 left in the game, putting the Wildcats up 14-10. This would be the last score of the night.
“Lake Worth is not a team to sneeze at,” Dunbar head coach Todd Lawson said. “We just had to meet them physical for physical.”
Next week, Lake Worth will take on the Eastern Hills Highlanders, and Dunbar will take on the Kennedale Wildcats.
