Running back’s two touchdowns lead Polytechnic to first win over Trimble Tech
Fort Worth Polytechnic hung on late over Fort Worth Trimble Tech for its first win of the season, 16-12, on Thursday night at Farrington Field.
After a blocked punt by the Parrots (1-7 overall, 1-4 District 4-5A D2) special team, Diego Gonzales was able to rush in for a 1-yard touchdown and score a two-point conversion to put Poly up 8-0 with 2:16 to go in the second quarter.
Both teams established strong defenses the entire first half as the score remained 8-0 going into halftime.
Trimble Tech (2-6, 0-5) had a plan to execute, however, as running back Antonio Anderson scored on the kickoff return coming out of halftime with 11:46 left in the third quarter.
But the two-point conversion was unsuccessful, and Poly kept the lead at 8-6.
Early in the fourth quarter, Gonzales ran in a 4-yard touchdown with 10:07 to go in the fourth quarter and extended the Parrots’ lead to 16-6. This was Gonzales’ second touchdown of the night.
The Bulldogs wouldn’t go down without a fight as they scored a late touchdown with 1:50 left in the fourth quarter, but they missed the extra point, setting the score at 16-12.
Poly got an interception late to seal the game and record its first win of the season.
The Parrots will face Colleyville Heritage at Scarborough-Handley Field at 7 p.m. on Oct. 27 while Tech will face Wyatt at Clark Stadium at 7 p.m. on Oct. 29.
