Brian Gosset: Biggest things from Week 8 of the Fort Worth-area high school football season
Week 8 has already come and gone as Fort Worth-area teams continue their march this season. A lot of action took place with impressive wins and big upsets, plus top recruits proving why they’re some of the best in the state.
Check out the best of the best from the eighth week of the Texas high school football season.
Best win
Aledo 64, Burleson Centennial 21
The Bearcats’ last district loss came in the fall of 2007, nearly five months after I graduated from high school. I was on the Burleson Centennial train after the Spartans took down 2020 state champ Denton Ryan and its 42-game district winning streak in Week 7.
People had their worries after Aledo started the season 0-2 and whether the Bearcats could beat district mates Ryan and perhaps even 6-0 Centennial.
But Aledo showed why its still a force, blowing open a 14-14 tie and turning it into a 64-21 rout to extend its own district win streak to 109 straight games.
Aledo improved to 6-2 overall and 6-0 in district. The Bearcats defense was stellar, holding Centennial well under its season average and under 300 yards on offense.
Biggest Upset
Arlington Heights 41, Colleyville Heritage 31
What a win for the Fort Worth school district!
Trailing 21-14 at halftime, Heights outscored Heritage 13-0 in the fourth quarter and 27-10 in the second half to pull off the upset. Heritage was in the area rankings and had been state-ranked at one point this season.
Heights improved to 7-0 for the first time since 2014 when the team won the first 12 games.
Running back Brian Furch rushed for 278 yards and four touchdowns.
Heights is 4-0 in district and the championship will likely come down in Week 10 against Grapevine.
Number
9
There are nine teams in the Fort Worth area that are 7-0 after Week 8: Southlake Carroll, Byron Nelson, North Crowley, Mansfield Timberview, Tolar, Richland, FW Arlington Heights, Argyle and and Midlothian.
Byron and North Crowley are having their best starts in program history.
Midlothian, which had a bye this week, is 7-0 for the first time since 1984.
Top recruit
Hauss Hejny, Jr., QB, Aledo
Hejny had the best game of the season in the Bearcats’ 64-21 win over Burleson Centennial. He threw for 265 yards and four TDs, and rushed for 160 yards for another two scores.
He connected with Jalen Pope on a 43-yard TD pass on the game’s opening drive. He also rushed for a 52 and 75-yard TD.
According to 247Sports, Hejny holds offers from UNT and Nebraska.
365 yards passing
Jake Wilson, Sr., QB, Byron Nelson
Wilson continued his hot season after the Bobcats beat Keller 45-17 and improved to 7-0 for the first time in program history.
Wilson is among the leading passers in the area and in the state.
He finished 21-of-26 passing for 365 yards, threw two touchdowns as the Bobcats scored on four of its five possessions in the second half and outscored Keller 28-14.
195 yards rushing
Owen Allen, Sr., RB, Southlake Carroll
Allen, the preseason all-area offensive MVP and No. 3 in the Star-Telegram Top 100, rushed for 195 yards on just 12 carries while averaging over 16 yards per rush in the Dragons 49-3 win over Keller Central.
Carroll, the No. 1 team in the Class 6A area rankings, is 7-0 on the season.
Allen scored two touchdowns in the win.
157 yards receiving
Ka’Morreun Pimpton, Sr., WR/TE, North Crowley
The 3-star Vanderbilt commit had a huge night Friday and was the favorite target for QB Chris Jimerson. Pimpton had seven catches for 157 and two touchdowns.
Pimpton continues to be North Crowley’s top receiver this season with over 600 yards and 10 TDs.
The Panthers were able to pull away from Weatherford, 47-27, and stayed perfect with a 7-0 record. It’s the best start for North Crowley in program history.
