Last second field goal sends Fort Worth Western Hills past Fort Worth Eastern Hills
Both Fort Worth Western Hills and Fort Worth Eastern Hills came into Thursday’s game at Scarborough-Handley Field with a record of 3-2 overall and 1-1 in District 6 4A Division 1.
“Both teams are pretty good,” Eastern Hills head coach Devvin Anderson said before the contest. “I’m expecting a very good game, pretty high and intense.”
Western Hills (4-2, 2-1) nailed a 20-yard field goal to beat Eastern Hills 30-28 with three seconds left on the clock.
“I don’t even know what to say, it was a heck of a game,” Western Hills head coach Blake Moilan said. “I’m proud of both sides. They didn’t give up, they could have given up, they could have quit, they could have gone down, but they kept fighting the whole time.”
The first quarter started off with a fierce play by Eastern Hills’ Kenwaun Durst who made a touchdown. The Highlanders (3-3, 1-2) scored a 2-point conversion which made the score 8-0 with 10 minutes left. The first quarter ended with an interception play by Eastern Hills’ Marquise Hailburton.
The second quarter seemed to wake up the Cougars as QB Keyon Butler ran a 73-yard touchdown with 11:48 left. This brought the score to 8-6. But the Highlanders quickly answered the Cougars’ touchdown with one of their own. Durst scored with 11:01 left in the second, pushing them up 14-6.
Western Hills’ Armani Perry-Brown brought his team within a touchdown with 2:58 left on the clock in the second quarter. The Cougars made the 2-point conversion, tying the game at 14. Durst ended the second quarter with his third touchdown for Eastern Hills with 16 seconds left in the first half and the Highlanders led 20-14.
In the second half, Butler scored his second touchdown of the night with 1:02 left in the third quarter to put Western Hills up 21-20.
In the fourth quarter, a turnover by the Highlanders gave the Cougars the ball and Western Hills continued to push for a win after Tyreke Lewis scored a touchdown with 4:25 left on the clock, driving the score up to 27-20.
Eastern Hills answered back when Durst made his fourth and final touchdown with 3:19 left on the clock and the Highlanders were up 28-27.
Western Hills would not accept defeat and Lewis scored his second and final touchdown for the team with 34 seconds left, followed by a field goal with three seconds left, shifting the lead 30-28.
This was the second time this season that the Cougars have won with only seconds left on the clock.
