Week 7

Centennial 23, Ryan 16

Denton Ryan’s district win streak is no more as Centennial used its stingy defense to knock off the Raiders 23-16 at home.

The game was close throughout with neither team leading by more than one score. Ryan (4-2, 4-1 in District 3-5A Division 1) took the lead twice in the first half, leading 7-0 and again at 13-7. Each Ryan scored, Centennial (6-0, 4-0) found a way to respond.

Centennial led 14-13 at the half but the Raiders regained the lead at 16-14 with 9:23 to play in the third quarter. It would be the last points the Spartans would give up as they took the lead for good with 5:51 to play in the third on a 10-yard run from Phillip Hamilton to go up 20-16.

The Spartans added a field goal in the fourth as Centennial would end Ryan’s 42-game district win streak, which dates back to 2014. Elijah Zeh led the Spartans offense with 26 carries for 128 yards and two scores and Centennial held Ryan to just 299 yards of offense.

Lake Worth 10, Kennedale 3

In a defensive struggle, Lake Worth was able to make the most of its few opportunities to take down Kennedale 10-3 on Friday night.

It’s the first win for Lake Worth over Kennedale since 1999 and it snaps Kennedale’s 61-game district win streak, which dates back to 2011.

Lake Worth (5-1, 3-0 in District 6-4A Division 1) turned a first quarter fumble recovery into a touchdown on its ensuing drive, which proved to be more than enough.

Damian Moore’s lone pass attempt was complete to Charles Lawrence-Williams from eight yards out to put the Bullfrogs up 7-0 midway through the first.

The two teams combined for 318 yards of offense and had four combined turnovers in the game. Moore led Lake Worth with 61 yards on the ground on 18 carries while Cameron Lyles had 73 yards on 23 carries to lead the Wildcats (3-3, 2-1).

Weatherford 41, Bell 38 (OT)

Weatherford scored 15 points in the fourth quarter and got a touchdown run in overtime to knock off previously unbeaten L.D. Bell 41-38.

The win vaults the Kangaroos (5-1, 2-1 in District 3-6A) right into the thick of the playoff chase as Weatherford is in a four-way tie for second with Crowley, Boswell and Bell.

Joseph Polk toted the rock 28 times for Weatherford, picking up 262 yards and three scores, including the game-winning score in overtime.

Bell (5-1, 2-1) led 28-20 going into the fourth quarter but gave up a score and two-point conversion with 5:51 remaining, then went six plays to regain the lead at 35-28 with 3:13 remaining.

Weatherford answered with an 8-play drive to force overtime on Polk’s second touchdown run of the night. In the first overtime, the Blue Raiders settled for a 34-yard field goal to go up 38-35. Bell’s defense could not hold on third down as CJ Thornton completed a 10-yard pass on third-and-9 to keep the drive alive. Two plays later, Polk scored to complete the comeback for Weatherford.

Midlothian Heritage 44, Summit 20

Kaden Brown had a breakout game for Midlothian Heritage, passing for 345 yards and five touchdowns as Heritage downed Summit 44-20.

Xavier Moten was Brown’s top target, getting four touchdowns on five catches and putting up 126 yards. Brown is a South Dakota State commit.

Heritage (5-1, 3-0 in District 5-5A Division 2) broke open the game in the middle frames, outscoring Summit (3-3, 2-1) 37-13 thanks in large part to four takeaways between the second and third quarters.

Heritage capitalized on three of those four takeaways for scores.

Arlington 57, Bowie 48

It was a night of pure offense between Arlington and Bowie as the teams combined for more than 1,200 yards in a 57-48 win for the Colts.

Both team’s passing attack led the way as Arlington (4-2, 2-0 in District 8-6A) got 423 yards in the air from Sam Semi and Bowie (4-3, 2-1) got 459 yards from DeAngelo Ponder.

Arlington started the game with a 14-0 lead after the first quarter, but the Volunteers chipped away at the deficit in the second quarter, scoring 27 points to trail only 34-27 at the half.

The Colts extended the lead in the third quarter, outscoring Bowie 17-7 thanks to a touchdown run from Drelon Burton for 25 yards and a touchdown pass from Semi to Isaiah Robertson for 52 yards. Burton finished the game with 29 carries for 170 yards and five touchdowns for the Colts.

Mansfield 31, Cedar Hill 13

Mansfield set the tone early against Cedar Hill as James Johnson ripped off a 76-yard touchdown to propel the Tigers to a 31-13 win.

From there, the Tigers (6-0, 3-0 in District 11-6A) cruised to a 28-0 halftime lead thanks to two Sergio Kennedy touchdown passes and another Johnson touchdown.

Mansfield’s defense kept Cedar Hill’s offense in check, limiting the Longhorns (0-6, 0-3) to just 191 yards of offense and forced Cedar Hill to commit three turnovers in the game.

Johnson finished with 140 yards on 16 carries for Mansfield.

Argyle 30, Lake Dallas 14

Thanks to six takeaways, a safety and forcing Lake Dallas to punt six times, Argyle was able remain perfect in its inaugural season in Class 5A with a 30-14 homecoming win.

Argyle (6-0, 2-0 in District 3-5A Division 2) scored on its opening drive and then forced its first takeaway on the Falcons’ (6-1, 2-1) first offensive snap. Two plays later, the Eagles found the end zone again and the route was on.

Early in the second, Argyle got a safety as a snap on a punt went through the end zone, and then Argyle added another two scores in back-to-back possessions to lead 30-0.

Lake Dallas scored late in the first half and looked to start the second half with a score but gave the ball away in the red zone, killing any real bid for a comeback.

RJ Bunnell rushed for 116 yards and two scores and Landon Farris added 71 yards on the ground.

Liberty Christian 44, Fort Worth Christian 34

Argyle Liberty Christian’s turnaround in 2022 continued with a 44-34 win over previously undefeated Fort Worth Christian to open district play.

Liberty (6-1, 1-0), No. 2 in the Fort Worth-area private school rankings, led 13-0 after the first quarter and extended that to 27-0 before the Cardinals (5-1, 0-1) got on the board. FWC entered as the top ranked area team after its win over Dallas Christian in Week 6.

The Warriors took a 34-13 lead into the half. In the second half, the Cardinals kept its offensive rhythm going, cutting the Liberty lead to 14 on two different occasions. However, the Warriors responded with points of their own to maintain the three-score advantage.
