Game of the night

Burleson d. Centennial, 22-25, 25-22, 12-25, 27-25, 15-7

The Battle of the Boot round two went to the Burleson Elks, who beat out the Centennial Spartans to sweep the season series in District 8-5A.

Burleson improved to 15-15 overall and 7-2 in district.

Centennial dropped to 3-5 in district.

The Elks, who beat the Spartans 3-1 in the first meeting, got 35 assists and nine digs from setter Katie Wong and Kendall Carlock led the attack with 13 kills while adding five blocks. Ahlyss McDaniel and Tatum Bloom both chipped in nine kills each and Peyton Roberts had a team-high 12 digs.

Centennial came out strong with the opening set and after Burleson tied it at one game apiece, the Spartans dominated the third set to take a 2-1 lead. Centennial nearly pulled off the win, but Burleson won the fourth in extra points before taking the fifth set.

Three Spartans were in double digits for kills led by Ne’Khaela Rogers game high 19 followed by Brylee Stevens’ 12 and Paityn Winters’ 10.

Winters had nine aces and 35 assists. Channing Ward added 18 assists and 12 digs. Savhanna Thompson led all players with 19 digs followed by Cayle Capaciete (15) and Allyson Reed (14).

Number

2000: Azle senior Makenna Dillow surpassed 2,000 digs in her career during the Hornets District 5-5A game with Aledo. Dillow also set a school record for digs in a season. She currently sits at 926, which is not only the most in the state, but most in the nation. In September, Dillow set the single game record with 69 digs against Wichita Falls Rider and was voted player of the week.

Results

Boswell d. Weatherford, 25-15, 25-16, 21-25, 25-22

In a battle of the top two teams in District 3-6A, the Boswell Pioneers got the upper hand of the home team Weatherford Kangaroos. Boswell, No. 2 in the Class 6A area rankings, went to 6-0 in district and 25-10 overall. Weatherford, No. 9, fell to 5-1 and 27-9.

Weatherford was in control early in the first set with an 11-5 lead to force Boswell to call a timeout. But the Pioneers came out on fire with a 20-4 run to take a 1-0 lead. Camille Middleton had a kill that tied it at 11 and Emrie Vedro’s solo block pushed the lead to 19-12. Rice commit Stephanie Gutierrez, No. 18 in the Star-Telegram Top 25, sent a ball through the block that made it a 16-1 run before she got the final point at 25-15.

Angelo State commit Madi Parrish, No. 19, had one of her 14 kills to give Boswell an 8-4 lead in the second. Weatherford pulled within 13-11, but again Boswell finished strong with a 12-5 run highlighted by a monster kill off the slide by Gutierrez, who finished with 14 kills. Middleton got the block on set point.

The Kangaroos went down fighting, leading the third set 7-4 on a kill by West Texas A&M commit Riess Griffith, No. 24. Weatherford continued to lead 11-8 on an Evelyn Benson kill. Parrish got a block to tie it at 15 before the Roos scored six of the next eight points that made it 21-17 as Boswell had to call both timeouts.

Texas Tech commit Kate Hansen, No. 4, got a one-handed block and freshman Claire Conner got set point to make it 2-1 Boswell.

Weatherford got out to a fast start in the fourth, but a 7-2 run by Boswell gave them an 8-6 lead. The game was tied at 10 and 13 before Gutierrez had another monster kill off the slide and an ace pushed Boswell up 18-12. A 5-0 run by Weatherford capped off with a Hansen point brought the Roos within one, but they couldn’t tie or take the lead as Boswell got the tough road win.

Middleton had 10 kills and Brianna Russell and Anna Bohanon had four aces each. Freshman Keoni Williams had six blocks. Middleton and Presleigh Roest each chipped in four. Alena Lopez had 16 digs and Russell and Maddie Konen had 21 and 18 assists, respectively. Parrish had a game high 28 digs.

Griffith led the Roos with 11 kills and 15 digs. Roisin Owens and Maddy Ballard each had 17 assists, and Veronica Cruz had 14 digs.

Grapevine d. Argyle, 21-25, 30-28, 26-24, 25-18

After dropping the first set to Argyle, No. 5 in the Class 5A area rankings, the Mustangs won the second and third sets in extra points and took down the Eagles in four sets during a District 7-5A game.

Grapevine, which went to state the last two years, went to 5-1 in district while Argyle fell to 3-3.

Ava Shankle was brilliant with 20 kills, 18 digs and seven blocks for the Mustangs. Ella Larsen had 10 kills and Amanda Coy put in 15 assists and 11 digs. Sydney Engel and Abigail Gonzalez had 25 and 17 digs, respectively and Mikayla Ethridge recorded 25 assists.

Midlothian d. Midlothian Heritage, 25-21, 23-25, 25-14, 25-16

After the Heritage Jaguars tied the match a one game apiece, the Midlothian Panthers blew past their cross town rivals in a District 8-5A game.

Midlothian, the No. 1 team in the Class 5A area rankings, improved to 8-1 in district and 29-3 overall while Heritage dropped to 5-4 in district.

Six players had 10 or more kills, three for each team, led by Lauren Safrit and Kenna Buchanan, who both had 16 for Midlothian. Safrit, an Oklahoma Baptist commit, hit 0.485 and added 27 digs.

Kenzie Berg chipped in 13 kills on 0.385 hitting for the Panthers.

Grace Sweeney led Heritage with 11 kills while Emilee Casey and Allie Schmidt added 10 kills apiece. Sweeney also had 19 digs.

Dallas Baptist commit Jenna McMichael, a member of the Top 25, led all players with 42 digs for Midlothian and Karli Rector finished with 50 assists and 17 digs.

Jordan Myers led Heritage with 29 assists.

Chisholm Trail d. Paschal, 24-26, 29-27, 25-18, 23-25, 15-3

A back and forth match turned into a runaway victory for the Chisholm Trail Rangers over the Paschal Panthers in District 3-6A.

Both teams moved to 2-4 in district play.

Claire Duley led all players with 24 kills for Chisholm while adding 18 digs. Harmony Soles put in a career high 21 kills and four aces and Kaci Wade had 48 assists and 18 digs. Lillian Quidachay and Natalie Pinto added 25 and 17 digs, respectively.

Paschal was led by Dayton commit Emory Hinckley, who had a career high 48 assists to go with 12 digs and seven kills. Ava West added 18 kills and McKinley Chase finished with 27 digs. Aniyah Castro and Ava Dyer added 19 and 16 digs, respectively and Rejinah Hickman finished with 13 kills.
