Fort Worth Wyatt wins defensive slugfest over Southwest to remain undefeated
In a District 4-5A Division 2 opener for both teams, Fort Worth Wyatt edged out Fort Worth Southwest in a defensive battle, 14-6, on Friday night at Clark Stadium.
Wyatt improves to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in district.
Southwest falls to 2-2 and 0-1.
“Tough night, tough opponent, I believe both teams are playoff teams, we knew it was gonna be a fight coming out,” Wyatt head coach Zachary Criss said.
The Chaparrals, who last went 4-0 in 2017, scored first when quarterback Kaid Barrett threw the ball to Quest Madkins with 1:15 left during the first quarter. Kicker Cristian Ramos made a successful extra point which brought the score to 7-0.
During the second half, Southwest defensive back Heslep Cain sacked Barrett for a 17-yard loss.
With 4:40 on the clock in the third quarter, Raylon Carter scored a touchdown from the 2-yard line. This was the Raiders’ first and only score. It brought them within one point of the Chaparrals, 7-6.
With 11:01 left in the game, Wyatt’s Ahstin Watkins scored a touchdown and after the extra point attempt by Ramos was good, the score was 14-6.
Late in the game, Raiders quarterback Jaziah Jackson threw the ball 24 yards down field before Chaparrals’ Ashton Larkin intercepted it with only seven seconds on the clock. That sealed the score at 14-6.
“The biggest thing is that we just make sure that we keep the guys’ motions intact,” Southwest head coach Phillip Tanner said.
Southwest will play Trimble Tech next Thursday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. at Clark stadium.
Wyatt plays Arlington Heights Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. at Clark Stadium.
