Police name suspect in shooting of former Coppell running back and BYU signee

Coppell police arrested a suspect Monday afternoon in the shooting of former Coppell running back and BYU signee Charles West.

Montay Kentral Howard, 18, of Coppell, is being held in the Carrollton Police Jail on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

West, a 2015 graduate, was listed in fair condition after suffering a gunshot wound to his left arm on Sunday at Coppell Middle School East. He was transported to Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

West tweeted at 11:08 p.m. Sunday that he was fine.

In a cellphone video, West is seen exiting an SUV that stops in the parking lot of the middle school. West is then chased behind a car by a gunman, who fired six shots in his direction.

Howard was arrested at approximately at 1:30 p.m. in the 600 block of South MacArthur by Coppell police detectives, Coppell said in a news release.

West told police that he and Howard had argued over money earlier in the day.
