Arlington Heights picks up first shutout in two years, keeps winning streak alive
The Arlington Heights Yellowjackets proved themselves once again after they beat Polytechnic 50-0 at Scarborough-Handley Field on Friday night in the district opener for both teams.
Heights continued its undefeated streak and boosted its record to 4-0. The Yellowjackets haven’t started this strong since 2014, the last time they were 4-0. That year they went all the way to the playoffs before losing in the second round to Wichita Falls Rider.
The Yellowjackets started off strong with their running back, Brian Furch, forcing his way into the end zone for the first touchdown of the night. Following the early score, Arlington Heights tacked on a successful two-point conversion, putting the score at 8-0 with 10:25 left in the first quarter.
With 8:20 left in the first quarter, Furch scored another touchdown within the last two minutes bumping lead to 15-0. Quarterback Zac Garcia fought through defenders and worked his way toward the end zone as he ran from the 40-yard line to the 8. Following that drive, the Yellowjackets scored another touchdown which brought the score to 21-0 with 4:23 left in the opening period.
The final score of the half was made when Garcia tossed the ball for a 40-yard touchdown to Tymir Biscoe. The score at intermission was 27-0. Heights found success on both sides of the ball.
“I thought our defense was playing so well,” Arlington Heights head coach Phil Young said. “Even if they scored once they wouldn’t score twice on us.”
Heights running back, Brandin Monroe, made a touchdown at the 6:06 mark in the third quarter bumping the score to 35-0. With 1:20 left in the quarter, Furch made another touchdown, and the two-point conversion was successful, which brought the score to 43-0.
Defensive back Jahsai Hunter ran from the 70-yard line all the way to the 15 and Latreal Brooks then scored the touchdown with 3:45 left in the game, which brought the final score to 50-0.
Heights last shutout came in October 2020 against Trimble Tech.
The Yellowjackets haven’t won more than three games in any of the previous three seasons.
“I was just proud of the way the guys played the whole way,” Young said. “Sometimes you kinda play sloppy and you finish being sloppy, but we cleaned it up in the second half and it was really nice.”
Arlington Heights will play O.D. Wyatt next Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. at Farrington Field hoping to continue its winning streak. Poly (0-4, 0-1) plays North Side on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. at Clark Stadium.
