Mineral Wells earns second victory of the season after beating Fort Worth Western Hills
Mineral Wells took charge of Thursday’s game against Fort Worth Western Hills at Clark Stadium, hoping to take home its second win of the season.
“Prediction? My prediction is we’ll win, we’ll score more points than them,” Mineral Wells head coach Seth Hobbs said.
The path to victory started for Mineral Wells when Mr. Texas Football Week 1 nominee, Jose Garcia, scored the first touchdown of the night with 11:07 in the first quarter. Garcia next ran to the end zone with 7:10 left in the quarter, making another touchdown for Mineral Wells (2-0), leading the score 14-0.
The second quarter began with both teams striving to prevent each other from scoring. However, with 9:07 in the second quarter Cougars QB Keyon Butler took it in and scored the first touchdown for Western Hills (1-1), making the score 14-6.
With 12 seconds left in the first half, Garcia rushed for a Mineral Wells touchdown and brought the score to 26-6.
During the third quarter, the two teams scored back-to-back touchdowns. Cougar Cam Hawkins ran for a Western Hills touchdown with 2:13 left, cutting the lead to 41-26.
The fourth quarter began with both teams scoring touchdowns.
With 4:19 left in the game, Mineral Wells’ Kavin Montalvo scored the final touchdown of the night, finishing the game with a score of 55-40.
“They’re a very resilient group, in the end I think we’re better than them,” Hobbs said. “But in the end, I think they’re maybe a little bit tougher than what I gave them credit for, so hats off to Coach Moilan and those kids because they played hard.”
