Everman sent a statement after the way it looked during its season opener on Saturday against Haltom.

Plus, the Bulldogs gave new head coach Michael Boone his first win.

Boone, a longtime assistant, saw as his quarterback Jarion Basped accounted for five touchdowns and Everman beat Haltom, 40-14, at Birdville Fine Arts Athletic Complex.

Everman (1-0) came out the gates with an 80-yard scoring drive that was capped off by Basped’s 8-yard touchdown run with 8:42 left in the first quarter.

“I was pleased how we started off,” Boone said. “Overall, I’m proud of this group. We talk about expectations and we expect excellence all the time. We have a lot of talented kids who put in a lot of work.

“I’m happy with the first win, but the wins-loss thing doesn’t really move me. What moves me is the opportunity to build these kids. That’s what drives me and what makes me get up early and stay up late.”

Haltom (0-1) couldn’t secure the ensuing kickoff return and the Bulldogs recovered, and turned it into points.

On the next play, Basped tossed a 34-yard touchdown to Jamarcus Canada to give Everman a 14-0 edge. The lead grew to 21-0 early in the second quarter on a 5-yard TD run from Kayden Brooks.

Haltom was able to respond as Jaylon Mason returned the next kickoff for a touchdown with 9:45 left in the second quarter.

After another long TD pass from Basped, Everman led 28-7 at halftime. The Bulldogs made it 34-7 on Basped’s 43-yard toss to Jemyri Davis with eight minutes to go in the third.

The pair connected again from 21 yards to make it 40-7.

“Jarion is special. He’s as good as any high school quarterback because he can do it with his feet and can make every throw,” Boone said. “We have a lot of confidence in him.”

Devan Ramirez-Powell scored for Haltom on a 2-yard run that capped off a 55-yard drive early in the fourth quarter.
