Kelvin Jones leads Dallas Spruce past Fort Worth Poly in football season opener
Dallas Spruce’s quarterback Kelvin Jones led his team to beat Poly 48-6 at Scarborough-Handley Field in the season-opening game for both teams.
The Timberwolves started out strong in the first quarter when Jones scored the first two touchdowns of the night.
In the second quarter, Jones ran for another touchdown. Jones then had a passing touchdown for 63 yards to Timad Cotton to push the lead to 29-0.
Jones and Cotton connected again for another Timberwolves touchdown for a 35-0 edge at halftime.
After the half, Jaylon Warren rushed 14 yards for a Timberwolves touchdown in the third quarter. The third quarter saw another scoring play by Jones when he rushed for 15 yards.
“The big takeaway is even with first game jitters we got a W,” Dallas Spruce head coach Carl Richardson said. “That’s the main thing.”
Jaidun Johnson scored Poly’s lone touchdown. By that time, the lead was too much to overcome.
“It was kind of shaky in the first half,” Johnson said. “We just had to come back and put a score on the board.”
Despite the outcome, both teams took this first game as an opportunity to learn and grow.
“In football it is growing pains, so we are hoping our guys keep on battling and keep on playing as a team.” Poly head coach Russell Kuhns saiid.
