Argyle has trouble with Sinton as Eagles shut out in state baseball championship game

Argyle returned to the UIL Class 4A state tournament for the first time since winning back-to-back championships in 2018 and 2019, but ran into a buzz saw that was Sinton, 9-0, in the 4A final on Thursday night at Disch Falk Field.

The Eagles end the season with a 35-4-1 record.

They beat China Spring, 2-1, in Wednesday’s semifinals.

They were going for their fourth state title (2015, 2018, 2019).

Argyle, which will move up to 5A next season, couldn’t get Sinton (36-1) out during a seven-run third inning.

The Pirates got a run in each of the first two innings on RBI sac flies, and then exploded for seven runs in the third as 15 batters came up to the plate.

The Eagles had a chance to tie or take the lead in the top of the third inning when they put their first two on with a JC Davis single to right and Alex D’Angelo hit by pitch.

But the Pirates turned a 6-4-3 double play and got an Eagle to strike out looking.

Sinton started its third inning with a pop fly to center. Then got a hit by pitch, single and single to load the bases. Braeden Brown singled on a 1-0 pitch to plate a run and make it 3-0.

Sinton went up 4-0 on an RBI sac fly and Kaden McCoy drilled a 2-2 pitch to the warning track in center to extend the lead to 6-0. Marco Gonzales and Blake Mitchell also plated runs and the Pirates were up 9-0.

McCoy was voted state championship MVP.

Overall, Sinton scored seven runs on six hits in the inning.

Argyle made two pitching changes in the frame.

The Eagles could’ve gained the early momentum in the top of the first inning when Davis led off the game with a walk. D’Angelo doubled to right to give Argyle runners on second and third, but Sinton starting pitcher Wyatt Wiatrek got back-to-back strikeouts and a fly out to left field.

Colton Roquemore led off the Argyle fourth inning with a single to right and Conor Lillis walked to put two on. Roquemore advanced on a wild pitch, but was tagged out at home when Argyle attempted the squeeze bunt.

After a strikeout for the second out, Sinton center fielder Rene Galvan made a diving catch to end the frame. Galvan also went 2 for 3 on the night with two runs scored.

Roquemore and Lillis each got on again to start the sixth, but after a batter’s interference, the two Eagles stole second and third. However, Sinton reliever Jaquae Stewart struck out back-to-back batters to end another Argyle scoring threat.

Argyle finished with five hits and two errors. Davis and Roquemore had two hits apiece. D’Angelo came in for Argyle starter Trevor Duck and didn’t allow a run with three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings.

The Eagles left 10 runners on base.

Sinton had eight hits and no errors.

Stewart allowed three hits and struck out five in four innings of relief.
