High school baseball playoff recap (6/2): Argyle dominates Game 1, Brock headed to state

Argyle 8, Stephenville 1

A three-run third inning sparked the Eagles to a win in Game 1 of the Class 4A Region 1 final against the Yellowjackets on Thursday night from Weatherford College.

Argyle (33-3-1) and Stephenville will play Game 2 at 7 p.m. on Friday night back at Rogers Williams Ballpark at Weatherford College.

Eagles’ starting pitcher Evan Brandt didn’t allow a hit through the first two innings and only gave up two hits that came in the fifth inning. He struck out two batters in 6 1/3 innings.

After two scoreless innings, the Eagles put up three runs in the top of the third. JC Davis ripped a pitch down the third base line that scored a run to make it 1-0.

Hunter Sandifer followed with a two-run single into right field to up the lead to 3-0.

After a bases loaded walk, Argyle extended the lead to 5-0 when Micah Roberts hit a hard grounder up the middle. The second baseman couldn’t make a play and another run scored.

Stephenville broke up Brandt’s no-hitter in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of hits, but couldn’t score as the Jackets stranded runners on second and third.

Roberts added an RBI double in the sixth and Alex D’Angelo added an RBI single in the seventh.

Sawyer Runnels came on for Brandt with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh. Runnels walked in a run before striking out back-to-back batters to finish off the Jackets.

Davis went 3 for 4 with an RBI and run. Sandifer, D’Angelo and Roberts all drove in two runs for Argyle.

Luke Stills had an RBI ground out in the sixth that scored Harris.

Southlake Carroll 2, Keller 0

Southlake Carroll pitcher Owen Proksch twirled a four-hit shut out and helped his own cause with a run scored and a run batted in as the Dragons took Game 1 of their Class 6A Region I Final against District 6-4A rival Keller on Thursday night at The Depot in Cleburne.

Game 2 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, back at The Depot.

Carroll (31-8) jumped on the Indians early when Proksch led of the game with a ringing triple to the wall in left center. Ethan Mendoza followed with an RBI ground out to second to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead.

Keller (26-8) had base runners in six of the seven innings, but Proksch was able to work around them each time.

The Indians best chance came in the third when Charlie Tomlinson led off with a walk and was bunted to second by Zach Makarewich. An infield single, off the glove of Proksch, by Jackson Hill moved Tomlinson to third with one out.

Mike Dattalo followed, but his fly ball to center wasn’t deep enough and Tomlinson was thrown out at the plate by Carroll center fielder Max Reyes to end the threat.

The Dragons added a run and had a chance to blow the game open in the fifth. A walk to Clark Springs and consecutive singles by Cole Bedwell and Tyson Drake loaded the bases for Proksch.

Proksch lofted a fly ball to short center field that scored Springs to put the Dragons up 2-0. An infield single by Mendoza reloaded the bases, but a sparkling defensive play by Tomlinson at short stop, who turned a 6-3 double play on a bouncer up the middle, got the Indians out of the inning.

Proksch struck out at least one batter in each inning except the third to finish with 10 Ks. He struck out the side in the seventh after a lead-off single by Keller’s Ty Zahradnik.

Keller defeated Carroll 3-2 and 4-3 in District 4-6A play in late March. The Dragons have won 13 straight games.
