High school baseball/softball recap (5/26): Argyle blanks Canyon to sweep playoff series

Argyle 7, Canyon 0

Trevor Duck threw a three-hit shutout as Argyle beat Canyon in Game 2 to complete the sweep in their Class 4A Region 1 semifinal series on Thursday.

Argyle (32-3-1) won 3-2 in Game 1 on Wednesday and advances to the regional finals for the ninth time in program history and seventh in the past nine years.

The Eagles will play Snyder or Stephenville in the next round.

Duck struck out seven batters and walked two.

Argyle opened the bottom of the first inning with back-to-back walks and with two outs, Colton Roquemore hit a two-run single to right field.

Argyle extended the lead with four runs in the third.

The first four batters reached base with a lead-off double by JC Davis followed by a Alex D’Angelo walk. Micah Roberts singled in a run and D’Angelo scored on a Canyon balk.

Hunter Sandifer singled to left to up the lead to 5-0 and Lucas Anderson added an RBI single with two outs.

During Wednesday’s series opener, Davis hit a 2-2 pitch with two outs in the top of the seventh to center field to give Argyle a 3-2 lead.

Sandifer went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs.

Evan Brandt allowed one earned run on two hits and struck out six.

Aledo 2, Abilene Wylie 1

Ethan Jaques allowed one unearned run on six hits and struck out five in the complete game win as the Bearcats beat the Bulldogs in Game 1 of their 5A Region 1 semifinal series.

Game 2 is set for 1 p.m. Friday at Abilene Christian.

Jaques only needed 88 pitches with 54 going for strikes.

Wylie scored in the top of the first inning and kept that 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth. Jaques hit a lead off single to left and Max Belyeu was hit by a pitch. Two batters later and Andrew Cambre tied it with a double to right.

Tied 1-1 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Ryan Jones hit the first pitch he saw for an RBI double to right that scored Adrian Guzman that gave Aledo the lead. Then Jaques shut down the order with three grounders on 10 pitches in the seventh.

Keller 4, Marcus 2

The Indians escaped the bottom of the seventh inning when Marcus had two on with one out to win Game 1 of their 6A Region 1 semifinal series.

Game 2 is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Denton Guyer.

Marcus had the tying run on first base after a Jake Duer single to center. The Marauders then got a base hit that would’ve either scored a run or loaded the bases, but a running blunder allowed Keller to get a runner out at second.

Then Nick Robb got a pop fly to left to end the game.

Keever Vincent started the game for the Indians, who were 6A state runner up last season. He allowed two runs on three hits and struck out four in three innings.

Kyle Beaton allowed just one hit and struck out five in 3 1/3 innings.

All six runs of the game were scored in the second inning. Jacob Sullens singled in a run and Charlie Tomlinson hit a deep fly to left that was a tough play for the Marcus left fielder that made it 2-0. Keller got a fielder’s choice and Fisher Polydoroff added an RBI single to right.

Duer, a TCU commit, drilled a hard grounder that got past the Keller shortstop to drive in two and cut the lead to 4-2. Marcus starter Tate Evans struck out 11 in 6 1/3 innings.

Brock 8, Idalou 0

Tristan Boedeker struck out 10 in six innings as the Eagles swept Idalou after Game 2 of their 3A Region 1 semifinal series.

Brock advances to the regional final for the ninth time in the past 14 years and fifth in seven years. The Eagles went to the state tourney last season.

Brock, which beat Idalou 4-1 in Game 1, scored four in the third, two in the fourth and two in the seventh. Sawyer Strosnider drove in three runs and Cam Harris added two. Tyler Moody went 2 for 2 with two runs scored.

Moody, Peyton Shaffer and Luke Stills each had one RBI.

Moody, Strosnider, Ian Fuchs and Jaxon Cooke drove in runs during Brock’s win in Game 1. Strosnider got the win with seven innings, three hits and eight strikeouts.

Southlake Carroll 4, Coppell 0

Owen Proksch allowed three hits and struck out 11 in seven innings to push the Dragons to a win over the Cowboys in Game 1 of their 6A Region 1 semifinal series.

Game 2 is 7:30 p.m. Friday at Dallas Baptist.

Ben Tryon doubled in Ethan Mendoza in the first inning to give Carroll a 1-0 lead.

Coppell got the first two batters on in the second, but Proksch worked around it with a strikeout, pop fly to second and a fielder’s choice.

Proksch, Mendoza and Max Reyes opened the third with three straight singles to load the bases. Tryon and Nick Jones hit back to back RBI sac flies to up the lead to 3-0.

Tryon added an RBI single in the fifth.

Softball

Aledo 8, Lubbock Monterey 2

The Ladycats scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away from Monterey in Game 1 of the Class 5A Region 1 final on Thursday in Abilene.

Game 2 is 10 a.m. Friday at ACU.

After Monterey took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Aledo (33-2) got back-to-back RBI walks to score Marissa Powell and Texas Ray. Powell hit an RBI single to score Macy Graf in the second. Presley Hull drove in Powell and Aledo led 4-1.

A Graf sac fly in the third scored Reagan Davis to make it 5-1. Monterey scored one in the top of the fourth. Madysen Boutwell scored on a double steal in the sixth and Claire Byars drove in Ana Flores to give Aledo a 7-2 lead.

Byars scored on a Graf RBI double to right field. Kayleigh Smith started and pitched 3 1/3 innings while Brenlee Gonzales came in relief and finished the final 3 2/3 innings.

Lake Ridge 12, The Woodlands 2 (6)

The Eagles got production from their entire lineup and scored four times in the bottom of the sixth inning to end Game 1 of their 6A Region 2 final.

Game 2 is 7 p.m. Friday at Baylor.

All nine batters drove in at least one run.

Lake Ridge recorded eight hits and 10 walks. Tia Warsop, Paris Johnson both got two hits. Johnson, Brooklyn Morris and Kassidy Chance all had two RBIs.

Avery Hoang allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out three batters.

Lake Ridge is in the regional final for the first time in program history.

Argyle 9, Iowa Park 0

The Eagles bounced back from their Game 1 loss on Wednesday to shut out Iowa Park and even the 4A Region 1 final. Game 3 is set for 3 p.m. Saturday at Bowie.

Argyle lost 4-2 in Game 1.

This is a rematch of last season’s regional final.

Ava Edwards threw a gem from the circle for her 23rd win of the season. She allowed six hits and struck out six in the complete game.

Peyton Peck homered and drove in two.

Maya Bland had two RBI while Regan Dillon and Taylor Platt each had one RBI and a double. Hailey Clark went 2 for 3 with a run driven in. Riley Owen also had one RBI for the Eagles.
