Softball/Baseball Recap (5/20): Aledo sweeps Abilene Wylie, advances to regional final

Aledo 7, Abilene Wylie 3

The Ladycats, who reached the Class 5A state title game last season, scored four runs in the top of the second inning and hung on to beat Wylie in Game 2 of their Region 1 semifinal series on Friday at Tarleton State.

Aledo sweeps the series while winning 14-2 in Game 1 to advance to the regional final where it will await Burleson Centennial or Lubbock Monterey.

Wylie was looking to force a Game 3 Friday night and scored the first run in the bottom of the first inning. But Aledo (32-2) came out blazing in the second with a Presley Hull triple to center followed by an RBI grounder by Ana Flores.

Macy Graf gave Aledo a 3-1 lead when she hit a two-run single to right that scored Maddy Jarvis and Claire Byars. Graf then scored on a wild pitch for a 4-1 lead.

Wylie got one in the second and one in the third to pull within 4-3 after three. Graf hit a deep fly in the fourth that dropped and Reagan Davis scored to put Aledo ahead 5-3. Brenlee Gonzales came in to pitch for Aledo and back-to-back perfect innings.

Aledo added to its lead in the sixth when Graf hit a short blooper near the shortstop allowing Byars to score. Then Jarvis scored on an RBI sac fly from Powell, her 51st RBI of the season.

Marcus 5, Timber Creek 0

The Falcons season came to an end during Game 2 of their 6A Region 1 semifinal series against the Marauders.

Marcus won 6-1 on Thursday.

The Marauders advance to the regional final and will play El Paso Americas, who swept South Grand Prairie.

Marcus pitcher Faith Drissel and Timber Creek pitcher Nicole Stuhr went pound for pound until the Marauders struck first in the top of the sixth inning with three runs.

LSU commit Tori Edwards ripped a two-run triple down the right field line and scored on the next at bat to give Marcus a 3-0 lead. Isa Alejandro added a two-run single in the seventh.

Drissel struck out 11 batters.

Timber Creek had a chance to score in the bottom of the fourth. Marcus intentionally walked Isabell Bojkovic to make it bases loaded and one out. But Drissel got a strikeout and then a force at home to end the threat.

Mount Vernon 8, Grandview 6 (10)

Two runs in the 10th inning ended Grandview’s season in Game 3 of its 3A Region 2 semifinal series. The Zebras end with a 33-5 record.

Morgan Holliday doubled to lead off the bottom of the first inning and scored on a Mt. Vernon error. Then Olivia Bauerschlag singled in a run to make it 2-1.

Mt. Vernon tied it 4-4 in the third with three runs and then took a 6-4 lead in the top of the eighth. Laney Bell and Faith Goodgion, the heros from Game 2, drove in runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend the game.

Grandview pitcher Caydin Blackmon ends the season with 24 wins, the most among the Fort Worth area.

Lake Ridge 5, Cypress Ranch 0

Brooklyn Morris allowed five hits and struck out five in six innings as the Eagles got their second straight shutout over Cy Ranch to complete the sweep in their 6A Region 2 semifinal series.

Lake Ridge advances to the regional final.

Avery Hoang, who threw the shutout in Game 1, struck out two of the three batters she faced in the seventh.

Morris added two RBI from the plate. Kassidy Chance, Maggie Miller and Raigan Brannon also drove in runs Lake Ridge, who dished out 12 hits on the night.

Baseball

Plano Prestonwood 1, Nolan Catholic 0 (8)

With the game-winning run on third, the Lions went for the squeeze bunt. A Nolan pitch went into the dirt and got away from the catcher and Prestonwood scored the walk-off win in the TAPPS D1 state semifinals on Friday at Clay Gould Ballpark in Arlington.

Prestonwood’s Trent Shaw and Nolan’s Nate Hall went toe for toe as both kept the game scoreless. Shaw had a no-hitter going until he was pulled after 6 2/3 innings.

Nolan’s Malachy O’Connor broke up the no-hitter on the next at-bat, but the Vikings couldn’t score. Prestonwood had its chance to walk off in the seventh with two runners on and one out, but Hall got back to back strikeouts to force extra innings.

The Vikings had runners in scoring position after a Santiago Perez double to left with no outs in the top of the eighth. Nolan was about to take a 1-0 lead on a sac fly from Hall, but Tarris Murray threw out the runner at home from center. Then Prestonwood pitcher Louis Bussard struck out the next batter.

Nolan was tagged out at home three times on Friday. The Vikings tried to score on a short passed ball in the first and third innings, but both times, the Lions tagged out the runner.

Birdville 3, Legacy 2

Grant Peart’s walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh sent the Hawks past the Broncos in Game 2 of their 5A Region 1 quarterfinal series.

Game 3 will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Weatherford College.

Will Bush doubled to left and Bynum Martinez walked. Two batters later, Peart knocked a 1-2 pitch to left for the game winner.

Luke Devasher led Legacy by going 2 for 3 with an RBI in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 2-2. Birdville took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third.

Hogan Shelby led the Hawks with two unearned runs on four hits with six strikeouts. Drake Dowd started for Legacy and gave up two runs on one hit with four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

Keller 8, Midland Legacy 3

Zach Makarewich drove in a team-high two RBI and Michael Dattalo went 2 for 3 with one RBI as the Indians comleted the sweep over the Rebels in their 6A Region 1 quarterfinal series in Midland.

Ty Zahradnik and Jacob Sullens also drove in a run for Keller.

Keller scored three runs in the third inning to take a 4-3 lead then tacked on three more in the fourth to pull away.

Zach Erdman allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out four in five innings for Keller. Zahradnik didn’t allow a hit in two innings of relief.

Aledo 4, Burleson Centennial 0

Thursday’s Game 1 was pushed to Friday after the lights in left field at Boswell turned off. The game resumed in the fourth at Godley where the Bearcats took it behind Ethan Jaques’ two-hit shutout.

The two-time player of the week struck out six.

David Jones, Caden Pulido, Trace Mazon and Adrian Guzman all drove in runs. Mazon, Max Belyeu and Pulido had two hits apiece.

Game 2 was played 30 minutes later where Aledo got another pitching gem from Hunter Rudel, who gave up six hits in six innings. Preston Clark retired the order in the seventh.

Jaques, Belyeu and Estevan Flores drove in RBIs as Aledo swept the 5A Region 1 quarterfinal series and advances to the regional semifinals.

Southlake Carroll 2, Frenship 1

Owen Proksch allowed one run on four hits and struck out 10 in 5 2/3 innings as the Dragons hung on to beat Frenship in Game 1 of their 6A Region 1 quarterfinal series.

Game 2 is noon Saturday in Wichita Falls.

Both teams were scoreless through three innings until Carroll put up two in the fourth. Ben Tryon led off with a single to left and Nick Jones walked. Clark Springs loaded the bases with a bunt single to third.

Cole Bedwell grounded out into a fielder’s choice, but drove in a run. Then Jones scored on a Frenship throwing error.

Frenship got one in the fifth on an RBI double.

Tyler White came on in the seventh and gave up a lead off single, but then retired the next three batters and ended the game with back to back punch outs.
