UIL girls state golf: Argyle wins team championship, Southlake Carroll third in 6A

The Argyle girls golf team wouldn’t be dethroned as the Eagles rolled on the final day of the UIL Class 4A state tournament on Tuesday at Legends Golf Course in the Austin area.

Argyle captured its second straight girls golf state championship.

The boys team did the same last week.

Argyle posted the lowest round of the tourney during the two-day event with a 303 on Tuesday. It was also tied for the fifth lowest score on Day 2 among all classifications.

The Eagles team of Lauren Justice, Ryan Purczynski, Katie Garner, Claire Jensen and Madison Wert trailed Midlothian Heritage by two strokes after Monday’s round, but shaved off 14 strokes on Tuesday and beat Heritage by 18 strokes.

Argyle finished with a 620 to take home the championship trophy. Heritage’s team of Cate Swize, Trinity Conard, Brynlea Caldwell, Maddie Sanders and Kodi Nolen finished as 4A state runner-up with a 636.

Both Argyle and Heritage had three golfers in the Top 10 individual standings with the Jaguars at the silver medal with Sanders’ 148. Sanders tied for second with Hondo’s Mallory Matthews, but made a birdie on 18 to win a playoff. She was four strokes behind the state champ, Alexandra Hileman of Sunnyvale.

Nolen came in fourth (151) followed by Jensen at sixth (153) and Wert at seventh (154). Garner and Conard were tied for eighth at 155. Purczynski had a 158 and Justice had a 173 to close out Argyle’s round.

Caldwell had a 182 and Swize had a 195 to close out Heritage’s round.

Wert shaved off 10 strokes from 82 Monday to 72 Tuesday for the lowest Day 2 score to get into the Top 10. Garner took off five strokes for a 75 on Tuesday.

Nolen also saved off five strokes to finish with the second lowest Day 2 round with a 73.

Southlake Carroll took home the third-place team trophy in the 6A state tournament at Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown.

The Dragons (Alisha Choudry, Chiara Brambilla, Ashley Kim, Morgan Becker, MaKayla Tyrrell) had the second lowest Day 2 round of any team in any class with a 294, only trailing 6A champ San Antonio Reagan’s 290.

Carroll shaved off nine strokes to finish with a 597, two strokes behind runner up Austin Vandegrift. The Dragons beat Humble Kingwood and Hebron by nine and 11 strokes, respectively. Both those teams were ahead of Carroll after Monday’s round.

Kim finished tied for fifth with a 146, one stroke behind third and three strokes behind first. Tyrrell finished tied for 10th with a 147. Brambilla was tied for 12th with a 148.

Brambilla shaved off four strokes while Becker shaved off five.

Grapevine, Aledo and Burleson Centennial combined to shave off 28 strokes on Tuesday during the 5A tournament at White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown.

Colleyville Heritage’s Cindey Xiao and Granbury’s Mason Lewis, the defending 5A champ, were tied for seventh with a 150. Both golfers shot a 77 on Monday and 73 on Tuesday.

Peaster’s Payton Hull had one of the biggest jumps in all classes, going from ninth to fourth in the 3A tournament at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin.

Hull, who also stars on the volleyball and basketball teams, shot an 81 on Day 1 and shaved off eight strokes for a 73 on Day 2. Her 73 was the lowest of all 3A golfers. When Hull ended her round on Tuesday, she entered the clubhouse as the tourney leader.
