UIL state track results: Brock first, Argyle second in team scores, Godley runner repeats

Godley senior Taylor McFarland wrapped up her high school track and field career by defending her title in the Class 4A 400 meter final on Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

McFarland, who will go to Tarleton State, finished in 56.42 and beat Waco La Vega’s Ariana Brown (56.64).

She also earned the silver medal in the 100 meter hurdles.

McFarland talked about having a target on her back in the 400.

“It’s crazy. Every meet I go to, everyone knows who I am. People will say ‘oh you’re the state champ,’” McFarland said. “It’s amazing. I feel so blessed to be put in this position and to see my hard work the last four years pay off. I was here as a freshman as well so it’s crazy to see the progress that I’ve made.”

Brock, Argyle team trophies

The Brock boys track and field team won its second straight Class 3A team championship on Thursday night, finishing with a total of 55 points.

The Eagles rolled as Breckenridge came in second with 33.

Brock, which is coming off the golf team title earlier in the week, got points in eight events, with a second place finish in the 4x200 relay. Nathan Jones got two silvers in the shot put and discus.

Eli Potts was in four events and got a point in all four as well as medaling in two events.

“It’s the kids. They put in a lot of work. They wanted to come down here and do it again,” Brock coach Blake Christenson said.

Argyle snapped a drought by earning the 4A state runner up trophy with 31 points.

The Eagles got a point in four events with a bronze in the pole vault (Mitchell Thompson) and bronze in the 4x400 relay.

“We wanted to come here and win some Lone Star Cup points,” Argyle coach Scott Styron said. “It’s an awesome feeling. We have a tremendous overall track program.”

Brock football star takes home two silvers

Brock senior Nathan Jones, who also starred on the football and basketball teams, took home the 3A state runner up medal in both the discus and shot put on Thursday.

Jones, who stands 6-6, is headed to Minnesota to play college football.

“Thankful for the opportunity. Worked hard and found myself here. Disappointed in the outcome, but thank God for the opportunity to compete,” Jones said. “That’s what I’m happy about.

“It’s a one of a kind deal to walk out on that field.”

Jones was an all-state football tight end that helped Brock reach in the 3A state final in the fall. He ended on the all-area football team.

Jones also played center on the basketball team as Brock nearly made a trip to the 3A state tournament.

“I like to compete at a high level and we probably did that in every sport,” he said. “I can’t talk enough about the coaches. We have sport to sport the best coaches I can ask for.”

Jones will report to Minnesota in June.

“Work my way and hope maybe I get a starting role, but thankful to coach Fleck for giving me an opportunity.”
