Softball/Baseball Recap (5/12): Centennial sweeps Northwest, Lake Ridge downs Heights

Burleson Centennial 4, Justin Northwest 3 (8)
Haylie De La Rosa hit an RBI triple in the top of the eighth and the Spartans held on to sweep the Texans during Game 2 of their Class 5A Region 1 quarterfinal series on Thursday at Northwest.
Centennial (27-7) advances to the regional semis for the second time in program history (2016).
The Spartans took the lead, but Northwest (26-9) got a lead off triple from Sadie Reid.
With the game-tying run 60 feet away and no outs, Centennial pitcher Bailey Lindemuth retired the next three batters in order with a fly out to center, a strikeout and a line drive to third.
Lindemuth picked up her 14th win of the season and struck out eight batters. She struck out 14 batters during Centennial’s 7-5 Game 1 win at home on Wednesday.
Centennial will await the winner between Lubbock Monterey and Amarillo in the regional semifinals.
The Spartans put up three runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Lacie Mendez. Northwest got one in the bottom half on Alexah Reyes’ steal of home.
The Texans started the fourth with back-to-back doubles from Sydney Zenon and Abi Young, and a single by Taylor Gouge. A one-out walk and RBI single from Reid tied the game at 3-3.
On Wednesday, De La Rosa hit a key RBI triple that tied the game at 2-2, then drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth to help Centennial take the series lead. Kylie Barnes had a two-run double as Centennial scored three times in the fifth inning and three times in the sixth innings.
Barnes’ double gave the Spartans a 4-2 lead, but Northwest went in front 5-4 on a three-run homer by Zenon.
Mansfield Lake Ridge 5, Harker Heights 2
The Eagles won Game 2 at home on Thursday to complete the sweep over fellow district champ Heights in the 6A Region 2 quarterfinals. Lake Ridge (26-6) advances to Round 4 for the third time (2017, 2018).
Lake Ridge, which won 8-3 on Wednesday, will play the Cypress Bridgeland-Cypress Ranch winner.
The Eagles quickly gained control with three runs in the first inning.
They added two runs in the third.
Avery Hoang got the win in the circle with five hits allowed and five strikeouts.
Raigan Brannon, Maggie Miller and Kassidy Chance drove in runs. Chance and Paris Johnson both went 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Tia Warop scored a run and had two stolen bases.
Gabi Wilson homered in Game 1 on Wednesday and Brooklyn Morris drove in four runs.
Aledo 4, Colleyville Heritage 1
Kayleigh Smith allowed four hits and struck out five, and the Ladycats took Game 1 over the Panthers in their Class 5A Region 1 quarterfinal series on Thursday at Aledo.
Game 2 is 7 p.m. Friday at Heritage.
The Ladycats (29-2) scored three times in the bottom of the first inning highlighted by a two-run double by Presley Hull. Ana Flores added an RBI single as Hull, Madysen Boutwell and Texas Ray all scored.
Heritage (27-4) got one in the third when Leah Flores drove in DeNae Vasquez Dickson.
Vasquez Dickson finished 3 for 4 at the plate.
Macy Graf had an RBI in the fourth.
Crowley Nazarene Christian 12, Fort Worth Christian Life Prep 1 (5)
The Lions beat the Knights on Tuesday in Boyd to win their second straight TCAF state championship.
Nazarene will move up to TAPPS D4 next season.
Savanna Spangler drove in four runs and freshman pitcher Gracyn Whitsell threw a gem and was named all-tournament MVP. Whitsell ends the year with a 13-4 record.
Nazarene had a 2-1 lead after two innings, then exploded for five runs in the third inning, capped by a two-run double from Sarah Blair. The Lions added five more in the fourth inning.
Baseball
Mansfield Lake Ridge 4, Rockwall-Heath 3
The Eagles rallied back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk off Game 1 against the defending 6A state champion Hawks during their 6A Region 2 area round series.
Game 2 is 7 p.m. Friday at Heath.
Matt Millett opened the seventh with a lead off single as Lake Ridge trailed 3-2.
During Will Block’s at bat, courtesy runner Trace Spann was thrown out home, but one batter later Hayden Mullins took a 1-1 pitch to center to drive in Block and tie the game at 3-3.
Nick Yates singled and Ryan Block hit a sacrifice to win the game.
Millett allowed just three hits and struck out six fo the Eagles.
Mullins and Jason Davis combined for three strikeouts in the seventh. Heath (28-5) got three straight walks to load the bases with one out in the seventh, but Mullins entered and shut down back to back Hawks.
Burleson Centennial 22, Granbury 5 (5)
The Spartans erupted for 12 runs in the fifth inning to complete the run-rule over the Pirates in Game 1 of ther 5A Region 1 area round series at Weatherford.
Game 2 is 7 p.m. at Crowley.
Centennial had 22 hits on the night.
Sixteen batters came to bat in the fifth with 10 hits. Three straight singles by Zach Applegate, Aiden Hatton and Carson Taylor pushed the lead to 13-2. Two batters later and Matthew Stancliff hit a three-run home run.
Logan Taylor and Seth Ambler added RBI singles and Applegate had a two-run double.
Stancliff drove in five runs. River Curs went 4 for 5 with three RBI and Applegate went 4 for 5 with four RBI. Taylor was 3 for 4 with a pair of RBI and Hatton was 3 for 4 with an RBI and four runs scored.
Taylor allowed two earned runs and had five strikeouts.
Arlington Martin 10, Prosper 9
The Warriors rallied back from an 8-3 deficit to beat the Eagles in Game 1 of their 6A Region 1 area round series.
Game is 7 p.m. Friday at Ranchview.
Martin (20-10) scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to pull within 8-7. Prosper (22-11) got one back in the the bottom half and the Warriors took the lead with three in the seventh.
Martin had five straight singles in the sixth with RBIs coming off the bats of Blake Brigance, Tristan Bittle and Luke Nohinek, who then added a two-run single in the seventh.
Easton Carmichael homered in the sixth for Prosper.
Nohinek went 3 for 4 with four RBI.
Others: Midland Legacy squeaked past Eaton 1-0 in Game 1. Mansfield Legacy defeated Justin Northwest 8-1 in Game 1. Hallsville beat Cleburne 7-6 in 10 innings.
