Fort Worth thrower short of podium, but enjoyed making school history at state track

Fort Worth Young Women’s Leadership Academy sophomore Peggy Carr made school history by becoming the first athlete to reach the regional track meet last season.

Then she made more history this season as the first athlete to reach the UIL state track meet.

The sophomore competed in the 4A discus final on Thursday. She finished in fifth place with a throw of 126-3, which came on her fourth attempt.

Despite not placing, Carr did beat four other competitors and enjoyed the experience.

“I really enjoyed coming to state. Just getting here was one of my big accomplishments for this year,” said Carr, who clinched a wild card spot after the regional meet. “It just pushes me to get better for next year.”

Her coach, Abdur-Rahman Taleb was right by her side and also soaked in the moment.

“It’s an incredible experience,” he said. “To be on the biggest stage we have here in the state of Texas, it’s an amazing accomplishment as a sophomore. At this level, it’s unreal.”
