Baseball recap (4/22): Weatherford clinches district title, Byron Nelson upsets Keller
Weatherford 6, North Crowley 2
Trace Holcomb hit a two-run home run and Kannon Kemp struck out 11 batters as the Kangaroos beat the Panthers to clinch in the District 3-6A championship on Friday.
Weatherford won its first district title since 2016.
Kemp allowed one hit in six innings. North Crowley scored both runs in the first inning before Kemp held the Panthers scoreless for the next five innings.
Weatherford tied it in the bottom of the first and added three runs in the fourth. Dayton Tockey went 3 for 3 with a triple, three runs and two stolen bases.
Omar Juarez had an RBI double and Hector Flores also drove in a run. Grady Moore came on in the seventh and struck out the side.
Byron Nelson 5, Keller 0
John Watson allowed two hits and struck out five in five innings as the Bobcats picked up a big win over the Indians in District 4-6A.
Byron improved to 13-8-1 overall and 6-4 in district.
Keller dropped to 18-6 and finished district at 10-2.
Aedon Barron struck out two in two innings of relief for the Bobcats. Riley Nelson hit an RBI single to give Byron a 2-0 lead in the third. Luis Santiago’s RBI double to left made it 3-0.
Troy Romero hit a two-out single in the sixth and scored along with Michael Schultze on a triple to right from Ryan Pruitt.
Keller was held to three hits and left six on base.
Arlington Martin 10, Grand Prairie 0
Max Grubbs threw a four-hitter and struck out nine in five innings as the Warriors beat the Gophers in six during their District 8-6A game.
Grubbs went 2 for 3 with two runs.
Blake Brigance went 2 for 4 with two runs while Cade Welhrich and Matt Hudsepth both drove in two RBI. Silas Gordon, Luke Spencer and Diego Morales each had one RBI for the Warriors, who stand in second in district.
Martin scored four in the second and four in the third, and Gordon’s RBI single in the sixth ended the game.
Benbrook 12, Diamond Hill-Jarvis 2
Ethan Waters and Ian Salazar combined to allow six hits with eight strikeouts as the Bobcats beat the Eagles in five innings to secure the District 8-4A championship.
Waters allowed three hits and struck out seven batters.
Dee Kennedy and Paul Harper both drove in three runs for Benbrook. Kennedy and Issac Lucero both scored three times. Salazar had two RBI.
Benbrook scored two in the first, four in the second and four in the third.
Jose Chaves went 2 for 3 with two RBI for DHJ.
Arlington Lamar 2, Arlington 1
Tucker Isbell allowed one hit in seven innings as the Vikings got a big win over the Colts in District 8-6A.
Lamar and Arlington are tied for third at 6-4 with the season series split.
Isbell also shined at the plate going 2 for 3 with the walk off two-run single in the bottom of the seventh.
Ryan Ott allowed two hits and struck out five in the complete game effort for the Colts.
Brewer 3, Azle 2
Evan Laredo hit a 3-1 pitch over the left field wall to push the Bears to the walk off District 5-5A win over the Hornets in the bottom of the eighth.
Laredo went 2 for 4.
Brewer pulls into a tie for fourth at 4-4 with Granbury. Both teams are a game back of Aledo, Rider and Azle, who are all first place at 5-3.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Isaiah Hernandez led off the inning for Brewer with a single to right. One batter later and Jayden Ayala tied the game with a home run to left.
Ayala struck out seven in five innings. Jeremy Johnson and Andrew Moralez combined for one hit and two strikeouts in three innings of relief.
FW Lake Country 6, Willow Park Trinity 1
Landon Fuller allowed two hits and struck out 15 batters in Lake Country’s win over Willow Park in TAPPS 1-3A.
Lake Country improves to 11-14-1 overall and 4-2 in district.
Willow Park drops to 11-7 and 1-5.
