Softball recap (4/22): Joshua clinches district championship, Argyle junior has 11 RBI
Joshua 8, Midlothian 3
Catie Amador allowed one hit and registered 15 strikeouts as the Owls beat the Panthers in the final District 14-5A softball game on Friday.
The win secured Joshua a co-district championship along with Red Oak, which beat Waco University. The two teams will play for seeding at Midlothian on Monday night.
Joshua took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Brooke Walker drove a pitch down the third base line scoring Kyndal Lay. The Owls extended the lead to 3-0 in the top of the third on a two-out, two-run double from Maddie Warren.
Kylie White’s two-run double to left center pushed Joshua to a 5-0 edge in the top of the fourth. Meanwhile, Amador, who passed 200 strikeouts on the season, struck out the side in the third and fourth innings.
Baylee Jones hit a hard two-run single in the top of the fifth to give Joshua a 7-0 lead.
After Amador retired 11 straight batters, the Panthers got on base in the bottom of the fifth. Meagan Hall reached third and scored on an Addie Prescott double. The Panthers would score another in the inning to cut the lead to 8-2.
Amador struck out the side in the sixth and picked up two more strikeouts in the seventh.
Argyle 14, Springtown 1
Maya Bland drove in 11 runs as the Eagles beat the Porcupines in five innings to secure an undefeated District 7-4A championship.
Bland hit two grand slams, a two-run homer and an RBI double. Bland went 4 for 4 with four runs scored.
Regan Dillon, Rylee Sandifer and Peyton Peck also drove in runs for Argyle.
Ava Edwards allowed one hit, one unearned run and struck out eight batters.
Byron Nelson 10, Keller Central 4
The Bobcats opened the game with six runs in the top of the first and Carlie Baker and Ava Weeke combined to allow four hits from the circle in their District 4-6A win over the Chargers.
Byron is tied for third place with Southlake Carroll. The two teams meet in a seeding game at 2 p.m. Saturday from LD Bell.
The first five batters reached base for the Bobcats. Amber Stanic’s RBI single to center scored Lauren Wachowiak. RBI singles from Johnnie Sanchez and Wachowiak pushed the margin to 6-0.
Central cut the lead to 6-2 on RBIs from Jaelyn Estes and Morgan Crandall. The Chargers made it 6-4 in the fourth when Brianna McFaddin reached on an error and then stole three times to cross the plate. Estes scored on a second Byron error in the inning.
The Bobcats pulled away in the seventh on an RBI single from Rylee Williams and RBI triple from Reese Ladewig.
Southlake Carroll 11, Fossil Ridge 1
The Dragons scored five times in the bottom of the fourth to beat the Panthers in five innings during their District 4-6A game.
Carroll got 11 hits while three pitchers combined to allow just two hits from the Panthers.
Lillian Cooper, Brooke Berwick and Cameron Timmons all went 3 for 3 at the plate and combined for eight RBI.
Berwick hit a double and homer while Timmons hit two triples. Abigail Smith drove in two RBI.
LD Bell 15, Euless Trinity 13
Kadynce Crenshaw hit two home runs and drove in eight RBI as the Blue Raiders edged out the Trojans in eight innings during their District 3-6A game.
The two teams combined for 18 runs in the final 2 1/2 innings.
Crenshaw hit her second homer, a two-run shot to center to give Bell a 12-9 lead in the top of the eighth. An RBI single from Katie Tyson made it 15-9.
But Trinity wasn’t out.
The Trojans scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth, all with two outs. A pair of Bell errors and a Amari Smyers single loaded the bases for the Trojans. Two more Bell errors and a Kylie Bonicelli single cut the lead to 15-13.
Tyson went 4 for 5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Delaney Stovall went 3 for 5 and Hannah Timani drove in two for Bell.
Bonicelli went 3 for 5 with three RBI for Trinity. Ella Ward went 3 for 5 with an RBI and three runs scored.
Timber Creek 4, Eaton 0
Nicole Stuhr threw a two-hit shutout and struck out 14 as the Falcons finished the regular season with the District 4-6A win over the Eagles.
Timber Creek finishes the season second in district.
Megan Allen led off the top of the second with a solo home run to left and two batters later, Stuhr’s RBI single scored Kennedy Bevers to give Timber Creek a 2-0 lead.
Eaton had the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, but Stuhr struck out the final two batters to get out of the jam.
Saniya Hill hit a two-run homer, her seventh of the season, to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead in the top of the fifth.
Morgan McGaugh allowed three hits and struck out 10 for the Eagles.
Justin Northwest 1, Denton Ryan 0
Abi Young threw a two-hitter and struck out 12 as the Texans edged out the Raiders in District 6-5A.
Northwest, No. 2 in district, scored in the first inning when Alexah Reyes hit an infield single to lead off. Sadie Reid walked and Josie Copeland’s sac fly to left scored Reyes.
After giving up a lead off double in the top of the second, Young would retire the next nine batters and 18 of the last 19.
Olivia Buettner allowed four hits and picked up nine strikeouts for the Raiders.
Mansfield Lake Ridge 13, Waco Midway 10
Brooklyn Morris drove in five runs and Maggie Miller homered as the Eagles beat the Panthers in District 11-6A to secure a co-championship.
Lake Ridge and Midway will meet again at 2 p.m. Saturday at Whitney HS for the No. 1 seed.
The two teams combined for 35 hits with Midway having 20.
Lake Ridge scored six runs in the bottom of the first highlighted by a three-run triple from Morris. Miller singled in run for a 4-0 lead and Gabi Wilson’s two-run single made it 6-0.
Midway would get two back in the second before Morris hit her second triple to drive in another run, giving Lake Ridge a 7-2 lead. Raigan Brannon’s single scored Morris to make it 8-2.
Two more Eagles crossed home in the third to extend the margin to 10-2. Paris Johnson’s double drove in Tia Warsop and Morris hit an RBI single to center.
But Midway would tack on three in the fourth, one in the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh before the Eagles finished off the win.
Warsop, Johnson, Miller and Kassidy Chance all had a pair of hits and Brannon went 3 for 4.
Burleson Centennial 2, Mansfield Legacy 0
Bailey Lindemuth threw a two-hitter and struck out 12 as the Spartans beat the Broncos in a District 8-5A first-place seeding game between the co-champs at UTA.
Natalie Moreaux allowed five hits, one earned run with five strikeouts for Legacy.
Centennial book-ended the game with runs in the first and seventh innings. Back-to-back singles by Halie DeLaRosa and Kendall Miller started the game for the Spartans. Legacy got a double play to end the inning, but DeLaRosa scored just before the third out for a 1-0 lead.
Legacy started the first inning with a Ryleigh Stinson single, but then Lindemuth retired the next 11 batters until a Lucy Ballard single came in the fourth.
Cori Van Cleef scored on a Legacy error in the seventh. DeLaRosa went 2 for 3.
