Boys
Boerne 7, Stafford 1
The Greyhounds set a 4A boys soccer state tournament record with seven goals scored during their win over the Spartans in a Class 4A state semifinal game on Wednesday at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown.
The previous record was 5 by San Elizario in 2015.
It’s also the second most goals overall, only trailing Wichita Falls Rider’s eight goals in 2000.
Boerne (26-2-1), the defending 4A champ, will play Celina for the title at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
Sam Theiss became the first 4A boys player to score a hat trick (3 goals) in a state tournament game. He’s also tied for second most overall, tying three players from Class 6A.
Jess Gonzales, Landon Murphy, Adrian Cuervo and Justin Moore also netted scores for Boerne.
Stafford’s defense broke down during a two-minute stretch in the second half that saw Boerne score three times. Theiss scored his third in the 63rd minute. Just 43 seconds later, Murphy scored to make it 6-1.
Cuervo scored 61 seconds later off a header from 10 yards out.
Boerne scored seven unanswered goals after Stafford scored first in the 12th minute on a chip shot over the keeper by Aron Maldonado.
The Greyhounds out shot the Spartans 13-2 in the first half, 12-0 in the second half and 25-2 overall.
Celina 5, Stephenville 2
After Boerne set the record for goals in a 4A state tourney game, the Bobcats scored five to tie the 2015 San Elizario team for second most during their win over the Yellow Jackets in the second 4A state semifinal on Wednesay.
Celina is in the state title game for the first time. It reached the state semifinals last season for the first time
The Bobcats (22-3-1) will play Boerne Friday afternoon.
Troy Peterson took a Kohnyn Gough off the head to score on the far post to give Celina a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. Nikolas Hamblin scored off a free kick 70 yards away in the 24th minute. After another Gough corner, Chase Laster finished it off with a header in the 56th minute.
Just 20 seconds later, Celina went up 4-0 on Hank Melton’s goal. Peterson and Rivaldo Argueta set up the goal with a one-touch cross to Melton.
Stephenville, at state for the first time, scored back-to-back goals by Gio Nava in the 66th and 70th minutes.
Josten Watkins had the final goal for Celina in the 77th minute after a breakaway from a defender before beating the keeper one-on-one.
Frisco Wakeland 3, FW Trimble Tech 1
Dripping Springs 1, Katy Jordan 0
Adam Knutson’s goal with under 10 minutes left pushed Dripping Springs past Jordan in a Class 5A state semifinal on Thursday.
York Merrill hit Enrrique Alvarez who then found Knutson.
Knutson hit a one-timer and chipped it over the keeper off the line.
Dripping Springs (26-3) will play Frisco Wakeland for the 5A championship at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Dripping Springs out shot Jordan 18-3, including 13-2 in the second half. It also had eight corners while Jordan was held to no corner kicks.
Jordan’s Elijah Betancourt had seven saves.
Girls
Celina 3, Boerne 0
The Lady Bobcats are one win away from their first UIL girls soccer state championship after they shut out Boerne in a Class 4A state semifinal on Wednesday in Georgetown.
Celina (28-1-1) extends its win streak to 20 games and looks to make it 21 when it faces Midlothian Heritage (22-3-3) for the 4A title at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
Celina made the state semifinal for the first time last season, where it played Midlothian Heritage.
This is Celina’s first trip to the state final.
The Bobcats had a 13-0 advantage on shots in the first half, 10-2 in the second half and 23-2 overall. Celina grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute on a Grace Pritchard goal. Madi Vana had a free kick from 25 yards out and after a deflection off the Boerne keeper, Pritchard finished it off.
Celina extended the lead to 2-0 in the 46th minute. Taylor Zdrojewski, who set a state record last season with 114 goals scored, hit the right post 10 yards out and Brielle Buchanan picked up the rebound and found the back of the net.
Zdrojewski got one in the 77th minute when her first shot was saved by Kinsley Sawyer before finishing off a second attempt.
Sawyer finished with 11 saves for Boerne.
Celina will join the boys team in the state championship.
Midlothian Heritage 4, Lumberton 1
Frisco Wakeland 3, Magnolia 0
The Wolverines scored two goals in the second half to pull away from Magnolia in a Class 5A state semifinal on Thursday.
Wakeland (22-1-4) will play Grapevine in the 5A final at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
It’s the second straight year Wakeland plays for the title.
The Wolverines won titles in 2011 and 2018.
Olivia Bos hit a corner and it was finished off by McKenna Jenkins in the 10th minute. After Wakeland took a 1-0 lead into halftime, the Wolverines upped the lead to 3-0 in a one-minute span.
Katy Gregson grabbed a loose ball off a corner and tapped in the second goal in the 49th minute. Exactly 60 seconds later, Dayleigh Bos hit the far post over the keeper 15 yards out.
Magnolia’s keeper Taylor Sanderson recorded 13 saves as Wakeland had 14 shots in the first half and 23 overall compared to Magnolia’s four.
Gregson had a game-high seven shots with five on goal.
Grapevine 6, Boerne Champion 3
Celina 5, Midlothian Heritage 4 (SO 5-3)
Rockwall 4, Fort Bend Ridge Point 2 OT
The Yellow Jackets, at the state tournament for the first time, scored two quick goals during the second overtime period to knock off Ridge Point in a Class 6A state semifinal on Friday. Rockwall (22-3-2) will play in the 6A championship at 4 p.m. Saturday against either Southlake Carroll or Austin Westlake.
Ridge Point (26-1), which suffered its first and only loss, took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute on a Charlotte Richardson goal. Rockwall trailed 1-0 at intermission, but the Jackets tied it eight minutes into the second half when Madelyn Weir finished off a one-timer from 10 yards out. Avery Shipman had the assist.
Rockwall grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 70th minute when Shipman’s corner kick was headed in by Lauren Piper.
Ridge Point tied it in the 75th minute when Taylor Vinson hit a long cross into the box. Dayo Tennyson dribbled it up and beat the keeper to the left side.
After a scoreless first overtime, Rockwall scored a pair from Morgan Countryman within a three-minute span to put the game to bed. The first came on a loose ball after a corner. The second was when Weir hit a through ball to Countryman, who shot it off the keeper’s hands before the ball rolled in.
Rockwall keeper Faith Graves had a game-high eight saves.
Ridge Point edged Rockwall in shots, 19-17 including 12-4 in the first half.
But Ridge Point didn’t have a shot in either overtime periods.
Southlake Carroll 3, Austin Westlake 0
