Girls soccer regional semis: Midlo Heritage, Carroll win 1-0; Grapevine, Colleyville to meet
Southlake Carroll 1, Allen 0
Freshmen duo Kennedy Fuller and Zoe Matthews paired up for the only goal of the match as Carroll downed Allen in the first semifinal of the Class 6A Region 1 regional tournament on Friday at McKinney ISD Stadium.
Matthews slipped a pass to Fuller just inside the 18-yard box on the left side and Fuller drilled it into the right corner of the net in the 57th minute.
Carroll (19-1-4) will face Flower Mound Marcus (23-1-3) at 10 a.m. on Saturday for the 6A Region 1 title back at McKinney ISD Stadium.
Following the goal, Allen (21-3-3) sensed the urgency taking seven of their 16 total shots, but only one was on goal as Carroll was able to chew up the clock.
The Dragons opened the second half putting pressure on the Eagles in the first 17 minutes with seven shots and five being on goal including the Fuller tally.
Carroll out shot Allen 8-7 in a scoreless first half with three of each teams’ shots being on goal. The Dragons had the best scoring chances in the first 40 minutes with two free kicks from 25 and 30 yards, but both went over the top of the net, shooting into a gusty north wind.
Madison Khan took a controlled corner in the 12th minute and nearly deflected a shot off the Allen keeper, but it was swept away. Khan also broke away in 37th minute, but her shot from close range hit the side of the net.
Midlothian Heritage 1, Stephenville 0
The Jaguars needed just 90 seconds to score then relied on their defense to take down the Honeybees in a Class 4A Region 1 semifinal on Friday at Northwest ISD Stadium.
Heritage improves to 20-3-3 while handing Stephenville its only loss (21-1-2). The Jags will play in the regional final at 10 a.m. Saturday back at Northwest against Argyle.
In a battle of the past four UIL Class 4A state champions, Heritage applied the early pressure. Rose Giambruno-Fuge got into the box and was taken down resulting in a foul on Stephenville.
Giambruno-Fuge lined up the penalty kick and scored her 20th goal of the season.
Heritage won state titles in 2018 and 2021. Stephenville won in 2017 and 2019.
The Jags continued to control the ball and their defense didn’t let Stephenville get a shot on goal in the first half.
But with the wind behind them in the second half, the Honeybees had more opportunities. However, the Jags back line and goalkeeper Tanner Sorenson kept the Bees at bay.
Heritage, which beat Stephenville 2-1 in last year’s regional semifinal, nearly made it 2-0 in the 28th minute, but was ruled off side. Kerry Scott had a nice attempt near the net a minute later.
Sydney Dickson put a nice touch on a ball in the 43rd minute that hit the top cross bar. Jules Burrows raced past the Stephenville defense and was 1-on-1, but the Honeybees goalie made a nice play to push the ball out of bounds in the 50th minute.
Stephenville had a pair of chances, but a shot went right to Sorenson in the 53rd minute. Then there was a scramble in the box before the ball went into the net, but ruled a hand ball in the 56th minute.
Sorenson and Heritage’s back line of Ella Brown, Paisley Mabra, Maddie Berumen and Joely Godfrey helped keep the Bees scoreless for the first time since Feb. 2, a span of 14 games. Stephenville came into the game outscoring teams 111-5 this season.
Colleyville Heritage 3, Lubbock Coronado 1
Ryleigh Adams scored a pair of goals and assisted on the game winner in the 48th minute as the Panthers defeated the Mustangs in a Class 5A Region 1 semifinal on Friday at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.
The Panthers (20-3-2) continue their best playoff run since 2011 when they play in Saturday’s regional final against Grapevine at 10 a.m.
Heritage took little time to score with a goal from Adams in the fifth minute. Coronado (22-4-2) tied it and the two teams went into halftime knotted up at 1-1.
Eight minutes into the second half, Adams found sophomore phenom Allie Love, who found the net for her 40th goal of the season.
Adams gave the Panthers an insurance goal in the 64th minute to score the brace.

Katy Gregson’s goal with just under 15 minutes left in the game pushed the Wolverines past the Panthers in a Class 5A Region 2 semifinal on Friday at Standridge Stadium in Carrollton.
Midlothian ends the season at 18-8-1.
The Panthers made their first trip to the regional tourney since 2018.
Meanwhile, Wakeland (20-1-4), the 2018 state champ and 2021 state runner-up, will have another shot at clinching a state berth at 10 a.m. Saturday in Carrollton against Highland Park, which beat Frisco 7-6 in a shootout.
Argyle 5, San Elizario 1
Emma Sheehan and Kaitlyn Niemeyer scored two goals each and Argyle beat San Elizario for the second straight year during the Class 4A Region 1 semifinal on Friday at Northwest ISD Stadium.
Argyle (23-1-1) will play Heritage in Saturday’s regional final, a rematch of the final last season. The game will start at 10 a.m. from Northwest.
Sheehan found the back of the net from close range just over two minutes into the match to finish off a Trinity Carter pass. She finished a nice pass in the box from Sophie Placke for a 2-0 lead in the 20th minute.
Sheehan also had a pair of free kicks. In the 35th minute, her attempt 20 yards off to the right was headed by a San Elizario player, who tried to clear the ball, but Niemeyer had a beautiful header that scored to give Argyle a 3-0 lead in the 35th minute.
San Elizario (17-5) got one back in the 45th minute, but Argyle went back up three on Niemeyer’s second in the 53rd minute. Back-up Stella Helm finished off a corner kick by Avery McNatt in the 74th minute.
Argyle beat San Elizario 5-0 in last year’s regional semifinals.
Flower Mound Marcus 2, Keller 0
Bella Campos scored two goals for Marcus two minutes apart late in the second half to give the Marauders a 2-0 win over Keller in the second Class 6A Region 1 semifinal at McKinney ISD Stadium.
Marcus (23-1-3) will face Carroll in the final on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Caroline Castans lofted a perfect cross from the left third that Campos headed in from just outside the keepers box to put Marcus up 1-0 in the 69th minute.
Campos headed in another Castans assist from 13 yards out two minutes later.
Keller (16-2-5) never got a shot off in the second half facing a strong north wind. With the wind in the first half, Keller supplied most of the pressure.
The Indians had nine shots, with six being on goal, to five shots for Marcus. Marcus midfielder Nina Mazzola split two defenders taking a pass in the 16th minute, but she was ruled off side and her goal was nullified.
Marcus took 21 shots in the second half with 10 being on goal as the ball rarely left the Keller end after the break.
Grapevine 6, Lubbock-Cooper 1
For the fifth time in the last eight years, the Grapevine Mustangs are headed to the Class 5A Region 1 final after eliminating Cooper on Friday in Wichita Falls.
Grapevine (20-2-1) will play sister school Colleyville Heritage for a state tournament berth at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
Grapevine scored the first six goals before Cooper could hit the scoreboard.
Baylor commit Theresa McCullough continued her playoff run with a goal in the third minute. After an own goal, McCullough found Rowan Truman, whose goal made it 3-0 in the 15th minute.
The Mustangs added three more in the second half, two from McCullough and one from Sam Larsen. Grapevine goalkeeper Ashley Knight made a pair of nice saves.
Grapevine and Heritage split in District 6-5A. The Mustangs won 3-0 while Heritage won 1-0.
